Steve Martin Teases ‘Father of the Bride’ Netflix Reunion Movie: “There are Really Some Good Surprises”

Who’s ready for Father of the Bride 3 ish? Tonight, Steve Martin, Kimberly Williams-Paisley, and the rest of the Banks family will reunite for a Father of the Bride reunion on the Netflix YouTube channel and Facebook page. Martin and Williams-Paisley teased the Nancy Meyers-produced reunion this morning on Today, explaining, “There are really some good surprises.”

On Friday, Martin and Williams-Paisley, Father of the Bride‘s titular father and bride, sat down with Today‘s Jenna Bush Hager to discuss Netflix’s Father of the Bride Part 3 ish, a virtual reunion special to benefit chef José Andrés’ World Central Kitchen. “It’s a script with actors with a story,” said Martin, explaining that Netflix’s virtual event is not your average cast reunion. Original writer Nancy Meyers wrote the new Father of the Bride story in quarantine, and afterwards, she came to her cast with the idea for a fundraiser.

“She said, ‘What if we did one to help people in the pandemic get food?'” recalled Martin. “We said, ‘That just sounds like a great idea.’ And I cleared my schedule! I’m very busy, and we did it.”

Netflix’s Father of the Bride Part 3 reunion will see Martin (George Banks), Diane Keaton (Nina Banks), Paisley-Williams (Annie Banks-MacKenzie), Kieran Culkin (Matty Banks), George Newbern (Brian MacKenzie), and Martin Short (wedding planner Frank Eggelhoffer) reprise their iconic roles from the 1991 film and 1995 sequel, Father of the Bride Part II, and update viewers on their lives in 2020.

“I have to compliment Nancy Meyers’ writing because she introduced the characters so perfectly, so well timed,” Martin told Bush Hager. “This is meant to be a gift for fans of Father of the Bride movies,” added Williams-Paisley.

The duo explained that bringing the reunion to life “took a surprising amount of work,” even though it was shot entirely via Zoom. The weeklong mini-shoot was particularly difficult for the stars, who served as their own hair and makeup stylists, camera operators, and sound mixers. “On a movie, we actors are so used to having everything done,” said Martin. “If your hair is out of place somebody comes in and moves a hair. Or if you need a little makeup, somebody comes in and does that.”

How did they do? Tune in to the Father of the Bride Part 3 reunion movie tonight at 6 p.m. ET/3 p.m. PT on Netflix’s YouTube and Facebook pages to find out!
