‘Dancing with the Stars’ Judge Derek Hough to Perform for the First Time Since 2017

Dancing with the Stars alum Derek Hough is ready to waltz back onto national television. On Monday, October 19, the new DWTS judge will return to his roots and perform in-show for the first time this season. Hough’s DWTS dance will serve as his first in-show performance since 2017, when he performed with sister Julianne Hough on the ABC competition series.

ABC announced Hough’s upcoming performance during the network’s “Virtu-Fall” Presentation. According to a press release, the six-time Mirrorball champion will perform with Hayley Erbert, his girlfriend and fellow DWTS franchise alum. Erbert appeared as a troupe dancer on six seasons of Dancing with the Stars and served as a mentor to Kameron Crouch and partner Hudson West on one-off series Dancing with the Stars: Juniors, which aired between Seasons 27 and 28 of the original show.

Dancing with the Stars Season 29 has proved immensely popular with viewers desperate for fresh content amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. According to ABC, the new season launched with its highest-rated premiere in three years (since the 2017 premiere) among the key Adults 18-49 demographic and brought in 6.4 million total viewers. Additionally, in each of its the three telecasts so far this season, DWTS has ranked as the evening’s top entertainment show and improved year over year in Adults 18-49.

The ratings surge comes amid Dancing with the Stars‘ biggest creative refresh in many years. Over the summer, longtime hosts Tom Bergeron and Erin Andrews left the show, and actress and model Tyra Banks stepped in to fill the role. Hough joined Carrie Ann Inaba and Bruno Tonioli at the judges’ panel after ABC announced that that longtime judge Len Goodman would not be able to appear live due to COVID-19 travel restrictions. Goodman will still be part of DWTS Season 29 in a different way as he shares his ballroom expertise from across the pond in the UK.

Dancing with the Stars airs every Monday at 8/7c on ABC. Episodes can be streamed the next day on demand and on Hulu.
