Cops is carrying on, despite being canceled earlier this summer. Only three months after Paramount Network said goodbye to the series for good, the Cops cameras are back on the streets of Spokane County, Washington, a favorite location for the long-running reality series, The Hollywood Reporter reports.
Cops first began filming in September and plans to continue in Spokane County through November, according to a press release. “We have a longstanding relationship with Cops and [series producer] Langley Productions, and we are pleased they have decided to return, highlighting the outstanding work our deputies provide to all of you,” the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement.
While the film crews are taping new episodes of Cops, we won’t ever see them in the U.S. The footage being filmed now in Spokane is set to air internationally. A spokesperson for Langley Productions confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter that Cops has resumed production in order to fulfill commitments in international territories that still air the series.
Following the death of George Floyd and a spike in protests against police brutality and racial injustice, Paramount Network pulled the Season 33 premiere of Cops back in June. Days later, the network made the decision to end Cops after 31 years on air, with a spokesperson confirming that Paramount had no “current or future plans for it to return.” The series had been criticized for years over its portrayal of police and treatment of its subjects, with some coming forward to say they never consented to be filmed.
Around the same time Cops was pulled from the air, A&E also called it quits on their own police show, Live PD, after the network admitted to deleting footage of an on-camera death. “Out of respect for the families of George Floyd and others who have lost their lives, in consultation with the departments we follow, and in consideration for the safety of all involved, we have made the decision not to broadcast Live PD this weekend,” the network stated at the time, later canceling the series altogether. Live PD host Dan Abrams later spoke out about the cancellation, saying he was “shocked and beyond disappointed” by the news.
