This October, Decider is going to celebrate Halloween by honoring horror movies, and in particular, the characters who manage to outlast, outsmart, and outrun the baddies: the Final Girls. In the past, we’ve highlighted the iconic “Final Girls.” Characters like Laurie Strode and Sidney Prescott; the ones who survived the odds to inspire generations of horror nerds. This time, though, we’re going to look at the modern horror muses who are subverting and reinventing the genre with their performances.

This week’s Final Girl is Samara Weaving.

NOTE: spoilers for Ready or Not and The Babysitter franchise ahead!

THE FINAL GIRL:

Samara Weaving as Grace Le Domas, a blushing bride thrilled to marry Alex Le Domas, the youngest son of the Le Domas gaming company family.

THE KILLER SHE EVADED:

Her new in-laws. All of them. And perhaps the devil.

WHY SHE SLAYS:

Ready or Not is horror-comedy about the insanely cruel things the wealthy do in order to preserve their place on the pecking order. When Grace marries into the Le Domas family, she does so with a total willingness to do whatever it takes to please this eccentric family of billionaires. After all, she’s an orphaned foster child and madly in love with Alex Le Domas. Keeping in line with some quirky family traditions is the least she can do.

Case in point: she gamely allows herself to be dragged into a family game night on her wedding night. The only problem is that she draws the worst card in the deck. Hide & Seek. While Grace thinks she’s being asked to play an innocuous drawing room game, the Le Domas family are bound by a centuries-old oath to try to hunt down and murder the newcomer to their family. Grace must rely on her wits, and more importantly, her scrappy survival sense, to make it to dawn.

In Samara Weaving’s hands, Grace isn’t a shrinking violet, nor is she a haughty glamour queen. She is a tomboy in a lace gown, running away from crossbow arrows in beat up Chucks. There’s an indefatigable quality to her that is positively winsome. That, coupled with Weaving’s unique role as a demonically-possessed teen in The Babysitter franchise, has made the Aussie actress Hollywood’s go-to horror comedy queen…when it comes to facing down the devil himself.

She’s just so cool, so relatable, and yet so aspirational all at the same time. Not to mention, hilarious to boot.

HER BEST MOMENT:

Honestly, Weaving’s most iconic moment in all of Ready or Not is a toss up between giddily laughing in relief at the end all whilst covered in blood or the last show of the film. For our money, though, nothing beats her final, exhausted cigarette puff of victory.
