Raised By Wolves Season 1 ended with a bang. There was the literal bang of the gun Paul (Felix Jamieson) fired on Sue (Niamh Algar), obviously. But there was also the revelation that Mother (Amanda Collin) wasn’t pregnant with a humand-android hybrid, but one of the snake monsters that had long gone extinct on Kepler-22b. Marcus (Travis Fimmel) ran into a new group of human survivors — an Atheist group, at that — and Mother and Father (Abubakar Salim) are now stuck on the other side of the alien world from Campion (Winta McGrath) and the other children.

Yeah, it’s a lot. However Raised By Wolves creator Aaron Guzikowski isn’t worried about juggling all that story in Season 2.

“I think, for this show in particular, I think it does well with lots of story going at once,” Guzikowski told Decider last week. “I think as long as we stick with the characters and only see what they see, I think we can handle a fair amount of new elements being added to the fun here.”

Guzikowski admitted to Decider that the new element he’s most excited to play with in Raised By Wolves Season 2 is none other than the relationship between Mother and her ravenous child. The child, Guzikowski confirmed, is a version of the extinct serpents whose bones are all over Kepler-22b. However, Mother’s child “has, perhaps, a few specific attributes that some of the original serpents didn’t have, due to who its mother is.”

As Guzikowski explained, “I’m obviously excited in terms of Mother’s continuing story, now that she has this natural child that she has unleashed on the world — what her relationship’s going to be with that child, how it’s going to change the fate of things going forward.”

Also affecting the fate of everyone in Raised By Wolves Season 2? The arrival of an Atheist ship to Keplar-22b! Guzikowski not only confirmed that more survivors from Earth had arrived safely on the alien world, but that there could be more on their way.

“There is a possibility of other refugees from Earth, unbeknownst to our characters,” Guzikowski said. “Obviously there’s a lot on Earth going on at the end. People only know what they know. So there are other possibilities, in terms of other folks, from other organizations and such on Earth, finding their way to this planet.”

However don’t expect those “organizations” to be anything other than Mithraic Church-related or straight up Atheist.

“The Mithraic manages to wipe out most of the other religions over as they took power,” Guzikowski said. “At the beginning, there were probably many different religions fighting against one another. The Mithraic won that battle. So it kind of simplified the equation a little bit.”

Ahead of the Raised By Wolves Season 1 premiere, Guzikowski told Decider that we would be getting answers about the more metaphysical aspects of the show. Now, he says we’ll learn early on in Season 2 why Campion was seeing a ghost version of Tally and who was speaking to Paul.

“I think you’ll get some clarity on how and why that happened. A little bit in terms of how this voice that they’re hearing, how that works. The patterns that start to become clear as we get a little further into the story,” he said, while also confirming that Raised By Wolves Season 2 will deal more deeply with the Mithraic Church’s origins. Specifically how they discovered their codex and how Necromancers were made.

Speaking of Necromancers, Guzikowski confirmed to Decider that not only did Lucius (Matias Varela) stuff Mother’s eyes down Marcus’s throat, but, uh, they’re still there…inside of his body.

“I will tell you that Lucius, at the end, he actually force-feeds those eyes into Marcus’s body. So Marcus, in that last episode where he’s tripping out there, he has those eyes in his body. So they’re in there,” he said. “What happens to Necro eyes when they’re swallowed by a human being I can’t reveal. But that’s where they are — they’re very much inside of Marcus.”

Guzikowski also told Decider that he’s optimistic they will be able to start shooting Raised By Wolves Season 2 in early 2021. That means production will start approximately 18 months after Season 1 wrapped. When we asked Guzikowski if he was nervous about how this passage of time might affect the show’s youngest performers, he admitted there’s a time jump built into the future of the series.

“Obviously there’s a reality there, and I think we’re going to have to figure out the terms of what the time jump’s going to be, based on that. I have already built in a bit of a jump to adjust for the fact that they’re going to be getting a little bit older,” he said. “But again, it’s always hard, with kids, to know how much change is going to happen, and how soon. All that stuff. But that’s just part of the fun of having a kid actor cast.”

When asked if executive producer Ridley Scott might return to direct an episode or two in the second season, Guzikowski said, “We’ll see. He’s extremely busy. He has expressed some interest. He’ll definitely be working on the second season, whether or not he will direct.” Scott is still working on his upcoming film, The Last Duel, starring Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, and Jodie Comer.

Aaron Guzikowski is all-in on Raised By Wolves Season 2. After all, it’s been his baby for many years.

“It’s been extremely gratifying just to have people see it, to have it be a real, living thing. I really love people analyzing it and digging into it. It was built for that. I really tried to layer it and be very meticulous about the creation of it. So it’s really gratifying that people are looking at it like that and inspecting it, enjoying it on that level. It’s been great,” Guzikowski said, before teasing what was still to come…

“Like I said, we’re going to a new part of the planet in Season 2. It’s going to be a brand new adventure in many ways.”
