Dan Levy Calls Out Comedy Central India for “Censorship” in ‘Schitt’s Creek’

UPDATED 10/6/2020 AT 7:34 PM ET: Dan Levy knows his show well — so well, in fact, that nothing slips past the Schitt’s Creek creator. When Comedy Central India promoted the series on social media with a clip from Season 5, Levy took notice and criticized them for leaving out a kissing scene between his character and Dustin Milligan‘s character, TMZ reports.

The clip shows David, Stevie (Emily Hampshire), Alexis (Annie Murphy), Patrick (Noah Reid) and Ted (Milligan) playing a game of spin the bottle at a party. And while Comedy Central India left in a same-sex kiss between Stevie and Alexis, they edited out the kiss between Ted and David.

Levy re-tweeted the clip and condemned Comedy Central India for its “censorship” in the scene. “You showed the kiss between two women, you showed the kiss between a woman and a man, then removed the kiss between two men?,” he wrote. “This is a show about the power of inclusivity. The censorship of gay intimacy is making a harmful statement against that message. #loveislove.”

Levy’s fan’s quickly jumped into the comments to offer their support to the writer and actor. “What??? This is so wrong,” one wrote. “And wait does this mean they cut out all the other gay kisses too???? Not that it‘s okay to even cut ONE but I’m genuinely curious. How do you cut out something that is the heart of the show itself?!”

Another added, “If they edited the show to remove kissing, they should’ve edited to remove the KISSING, not JUST the *men* kissing. Some people don’t like seeing men and women kiss. Some people don’t like seeing women kiss. Maybe ‘some people’ should find a different show.”

Some fans even replied to Levy’s tweet by adding in the deleted kiss on their own, posting a screeshot of Ted and David kissing during the game. Along with the photo, one fan wrote, “Hey @ComedyCentralIn don’t remove anything from this beautiful show that Dan created to be free from homophobia! Removing this kiss goes directly against the message of the show!”

The Schitt’s Creek star later followed up his first tweet with a clarification, reminding his followers that the censorship came from a network in India, not the U.S. Comedy Central. “I thought I made this pretty clear but for those who are confused, this is about a channel in India,” Levy wrote. “@ComedyCentral in America is not censoring the show. They have been lovely and respectful. Thank you for your time.” Comedy Central India has not issued a public comment about the post or replied to Levy’s criticism.

Not long after Schitt’s Creek swept the Emmys comedy categories, the sixth and final season of the series has finally dropped on Netflix, where you can stream the show in all of its glory — including the David and Ted kiss, uncensored, from Season 5.
