‘Selena: The Series’ Gets Premiere Date, First Look From Netflix

This winter, a legend is coming to Netflix. Today the streaming giant debuted the first teaser trailer and key art for Selena: The Series, an upcoming drama about one of the most celebrated Mexican-American artists of all time. But that’s not all. Netflix also announced that we can expect to see this new series in December.
The two-part Selena: The Series will follow Selena Quintanilla-Pérez from her early days in Texas to the height of her fame. Netflix included a description about the upcoming drama in its press release:

Before she became the Queen of Tejano Music, Selena Quintanilla was a young girl from Texas with big dreams and an even bigger voice. The two-part coming-of-age drama Selena: The Series explores the once-in-a-generation performer’s journey as a young artist, from singing small gigs in Corpus Christi with her family to becoming one of the most successful Latin artists of all time — and the years of grit and sacrifice the Quintanilla family navigated together before Selena’s meteoric rise to fame.

Selena: The Series was created by Moises Zamora, who has worked on American Crime and Star. This Is Us‘ Don Todd will serve as a consultant, and the series will be executive produced by Jaime Dávila, Rico Martinez, Hiromi Kamata, Suzette Quintanilla, Simran A. Singh, and Zamora. Christian Serratos, who is best known for portraying Rosita Espinosa in The Walking Dead, will star as Selena. The series will also star Gabriel Chavarria, Ricardo Chavira, Noemí Gonzalez, and Seidy López.
Selena’s story is a deeply sad one. Known as the “Queen of Tejano music”, Selena rose from humble beginnings to become a beloved singer, songwriter, model, actress, fashion designer, and spokesperson. According to Billboard she was the top-selling Latin artist of the 1990s. But her success ended too soon. On March 31, 1995 Selena was shot and killed by her friend and former manager Yolanda Saldívar. The murder happened just 16 days before Selena’s 24th birthday.
Though this icon was taken from the world too soon, another generation will be able to learn about her thanks to Netflix. The first part of Selena: The Series will premiere on December 4. Check out the teaser above and head over to the series’ Instagram page for more previews.
