The Universal Monster Movies Your Dad Loves Are All on Peacock

Halloween parties may be canceled this year, but you can still get in the spooky spirit by watching Halloween movies on streaming from the safety of your home. Luckily, NBCUniversal’s new streaming service, Peacock, has made that easy for you with a nearly complete collection of Universal Classic Monster movies. That includes all the famous ’30s and ’40s horror classics and their sequels like Dracula starring Bela Lugosi, Frankenstein starring Boris Karloff, The Invisible Man starring Claude Rains, and more.

For the uninitiated, the Universal Classic Monsters movies were the first “shared universe” movies in Hollywood, ever. (Where do you think Marvel got the idea?) It started with the silent, non-musical adaptation of The Phantom of the Opera in 1925, and went on to encapsulate some of the most famed cinematic monsters of all time—Dracula, Frankenstein, the Mummy, the Wolf Man, and more. The best part? A decent number of these movies are streaming on the free version of Peacock, which means you can watch them totally free of charge with ad breaks. Three of the big ones—Frankenstein, The Mummy, and The Wolf Man—are behind the Peacock paywall, which is $4.99 a month with ads, or $9.99 a month without ads. And there are a few holes in the collection: 1954’s The Creature from the Black Lagoon and its sequel are not streaming on either tier. (Though the third film in that series, The Creature Walks Among Us, is streaming on Peacock Free.)

Still, for those who love the horror classics—like, say, your dad—Peacock has far more to offer than, say, Netflix, which doesn’t host any horror movies made before the year 1981. Peacock hasn’t yet broken through to the dad demographic, based on personal experience, but this could be its chance. (Not to mention all of the spooky Alfred Hitchcock Presents episodes, too!)
