‘American Pie 9’ Director Calls Cut Male Full-Frontal Nude Scene a “Total Double Standard”

American Pie established itself as a classic sex comedy when it premiered in 1999, and went on to inspire multiple spinoff films with similar raunchy plotlines. But fans of the original will find the latest installment in the franchise to be pretty tame compared to the past few. After an eight-year lull since the last film dropped in 2012, American Pie Presents: Girls’ Rules, just premiered on Netflix and is proving to be a hit with viewers, climbing its way up in the Top 10 after only 24 hours on the streaming service. But if you’re watching the film for some steamy scenes, you might be a little disappointed.

In an interview with Yahoo Entertainment, Girls’ Rules director Mike Elliott admitted that the film is “a pretty innocent picture.” In other words, nobody is getting it on with a pie this time around. Even though the final cut that made its way to Netflix and VOD won’t make you blush like the past few American Pie films, that doesn’t mean they didn’t try to sneak in some dirtier jokes. In fact, Elliott even had full-frontal nudity in the works for a scene in which Zachary Gordon’s (Diary of a Wimpy Kid) character drops his pants and bares it all (well, sort of — Elliot pointed out that Gordon was wearing a prosthetic for the scene).

Whether you wanted to see that or not, you never will. Universal scrapped the scene and removed it from the final cut. “I wish it were in there,” Elliott said, pointing out the “total double standard” in Hollywood for male and female nudity. “Ever since there’s been movie ratings, there’s been this uncomfortableness that’s applied to male nudity, and not female nudity,” he said. “It exists at the filmmaker level, the studio level and the ratings board level.

“I was hoping to break that, but I couldn’t in this case. And I thought it would be great for Zach to do, because he was in all of those Wimpy Kid movies, and it was time for him to finally burst out! Maybe it’ll end up on a director’s cut someday, because it’s pretty funny. But it still plays OK without it.”

And according to Elliot, there was plenty more raunchy material where that one came from which never made the final cut. The director said that most of the dirtiest bits were created by the movie’s team of female writers. “They really made me blush,” Elliot said. “I can be kind of gross sometimes myself, but they had a lot of really, really raunchy ideas that couldn’t be in the movie.”
