‘Animaniacs’ Reboot on Hulu: Release Date and First Look

Hulu is reviving a classic cartoon series with a new twist. The streaming service released a first look at Steven Spielberg‘s upcoming Animaniacs reboot, showing us a new scene that blends the classic series with one of the producer’s own famous films, Jurassic Park

In the new Animaniacs clip, released yesterday by Hulu, Alan Grant and Ellie Sattler find themselves face to face with the Animaniacs characters they thought were long extinct after being locked up in the Warner Bros. vault when the original series ended back in 1998. To their surprise, they Animaniacs are still hanging around in 2020 and up to their old antics.

“Alan, this species of cartoon has been extinct since 1998,” Sattler tells Grant, who literally helps her see the animated creatures turning her head to look. “I mean, these haven’t been seen on TV since the golden era of animation!” Spielberg himself makes an appearance in the clip, reassuring Sattler and Grant that they really are seeing the Animaniacs. When Sattler says, “These don’t look like re-runs,” while examining the characters, an animated Spielberg replies, “Well, they’re not. I re-animated them.”

As if getting the Animaniacs’ Dot, Wakko and and Yakko wasn’t enough, it turns out that Spielberg has even more in store. “We’re bringing back Pinky and the Brain,” he reveals, making Sattler and Grant turn speechless — Grant even faints, he’s so overwhelmed. As the funny little characters bound away toward the sunset, Sattler asks, “Where are they going?” Spielberg replies, “Home. Welcome to Animaniacs.”

The new series brings back the original voice behind Dot, Tress MacNeille, as well as Jess Harnell (Wakko Warner), Maurice LaMarche (the Brain), Rob Paulsen (Pinky, Yakko, and Dr. Otto von Scratchansniff) and Frank Welker ( Ralph the Guard). Abby Trott is joining as Dr. Ellie Sattler.
