Sarah Jeffery is standing up for her work on The CW‘s Charmed reboot after facing some harsh criticism from the original series’ stars. Not long after Charmed actresses Rose McGowan and Holly Marie Combs bashed the new take on their show over social media, Jeffery is defending her series, calling the two women “sad and quite frankly pathetic” for their online comments, TV Line reports.
Jeffery’s response comes after McGowan and Combs ripped the Charmed reboot in in an Oct. 10 Instagram Live, where Combs speculated that Netflix didn’t want users to find the old Charmed and McGowan added that the new show “sucks.” “I haven’t seen it, I can’t say that. I’ve never seen it,” she said as Combs laughed. “But I’m happy that people have jobs. But it can still suck.”
After the actresses criticized The CW’s Charmed, Jeffery, who stars as Maggie Vera, stood up for the series on Twitter last night. Jeffery said she saw their video earlier, but “refrained from saying anything.” “I thought, better to just let them shout into the abyss,” she wrote. “But I do want to say, I find it sad and quite frankly pathetic to see grown women behaving this way.
“I truly hope they find happiness elsewhere, and not in the form of putting down other WOC [Women of Color],” she continued. “I would be embarrassed to behave this way. Peace and love to y’all.”
The stars of the original Charmed, which also featured Alyssa Milano and Shannen Doherty, have been vocal about their disappointment with the new series before. Back in 2018, at the very start of The CW series, Combs tweeted, “Until you ask us to rewrite it like Brad Kern did weekly don’t even think of capitalizing on our hard work. Charmed belongs to the 4 of us, our vast amount of writers, crews, and predominantly the fans. FYI you will not fool them by owning a title/stamp. So bye.”
She also rejected The CW’s “fierce, funny, feminist” twist on the show, tweeting earlier that year, “I will never understand what is fierce, funny, or feminist in creating a show that basically says the original actresses are too old to do a job they did 12 years ago.”
