You can’t kill Dexter. The serial killer drama is getting a second life at Showtime, the network announced today, with a revival of the show coming eight years after the finale aired in 2013. Both Dexter himself, Michael C. Hall, and original showrunner Clyde Phillips are confirmed to return for the 10-episode limited series, which is set to begin production early next year.
Gary Levine and Jana Winograde, Presidents of Entertainment, Showtime Networks Inc., confirmed the news in a press release today. “Dexter is such a special series, both for its millions of fans and for SHOWTIME, as this breakthrough show helped put our network on the map many years ago,” Levine said. “We would only revisit this unique character if we could find a creative take that was truly worthy of the brilliant, original series. Well, I am happy to report that Clyde Phillips and Michael C. Hall have found it, and we can’t wait to shoot it and show it to the world!”
Dexter first premiered on Showtime in 2006 and went on to win multiple awards, including Emmy and Golden Globe nominations for best television drama series and the 2008 Peabody Award in 2008, and was also named one of AFI’s top 10 television series twice. The series ended after eight seasons with Dexter faking his own death and leaving for Oregon to live a new life. While the season finale proved to be unpopular with fans and critics — Vulture called it “a terrible end” — the revival series gives the show a second chance at redemption.
Hall, who starred in Dexter for all eight seasons, is a six-time Emmy nominee for Outstanding Lead Actor, earning five of his nominations for his work playing the blood spatter analyst and vigilante serial killer on the series. He’s also known for his work on Six Feet Under, Christine and Safe.
Phillips, who served as the Dexter showrunner until 2009, when he left the series. Aside from his work on the Showtime drama, he’s also created shows like Suddenly Susan, Get Real and Parker Lewis Can’t Lose, and has producing and writing credits on Nurse Jackie, Feed the Beast and Boomtown.
Showtime has set a tentative 2021 premiere date for the Dexter limited series, but keep checking back for more information on the upcoming drama.
