‘Parasite’ Will Be Parodied By ‘The Simpsons’ In 2021

Every October, fans of The Simpsons eagerly await the arrival of the show’s annual “Treehouse Of Horror” episode. Over the years, the show has parodied everything from Bram Stoker’s Dracula (in “THOH IV”) to Stranger Things (“THOH XXX”) to The Diving Bell And The Butterfly (really!), but during a panel discussion last night, Simpsons EP and showrunner Al Jean broke a bit of exciting news that’s sure to get both the die-hard Simpsons fans and the #BongHive equally pumped: In 2021, The Simpsons will be basing a “THOH” segment on Bong Joon-ho’s Oscar-winning film, Parasite.

Last night, Decider joined up with FOX and the Paley Center for Media to present “Paley Front Row: The Simpsons Treehouse of Horror,” a panel discussion spotlighting thirty-plus years of “Treehouse of Horror” episodes on The Simpsons. The panel participants included: Al Jean (EP/showrunner), Matt Selman (EP), Yeardley Smith (voice of Lisa Simpson and moderator), Mike B. Anderson (supervising director), and Steve Moore (director). This program will be available for view on Verizon Media’s Yahoo Entertainment on Saturday, October 17 at 8pm ET/5pm PT, while Paley Members and Citi will have early access to the program starting on Friday, October 16.

“Treehouse Of Horror XXXI” will air on FOX this Sunday, October 18, but Al Jean said last night that his team of writers, directors, and animators are already hard at work on “Treehouse Of Horror XXXII,” which will air sometime in 2021. A normal episode of The Simpsons takes about 9 months to develop from soup to nuts, but because of the added visual complexity of the “Treehouse Of Horror” series, work begins on those episodes 12 months in advance of the episode’s airdate. Jean explained last night that the writing staff begins with a list of over 50 pitches for “THOH” segments, which he then narrows down to the three (plus an intro couch gag) that make it to air. Jean did not specify if the show’s homage to 2020 Academy Award-winning Best Picture Parasite will be a couch gag or a full segment, but either way, at least we FINALLY have something to look forward to in 2021!

Of course, Simpsons superfans (like yours truly) will recall that the show has already established a character called “Parasite,” one half of “Eastern Europe’s favorite cat and mouse team” on The Worker & Parasite Show. Parasite made its debut in the “Krusty Gets Kancelled” episode (Season 4, Episode 22), which finds Krusty losing a ratings battle against Gabbo, the “bad widdle boy.” Fingers crossed Parasite gets to meet Parasite when “Treehouse Of Horror XXXII” airs sometime in 2021!

We should also take this opportunity to mention that Decider is going to be giving away a handful of exclusive “Treehouse of Horror XXXI” large-format posters, sure to become a collector’s item (they are part of a very limited-run batch). All you have to do to be entered in this sweepstakes giveaway is to sign-up to receive one of Decider’s free email newsletters sometime between now and October 31.
