Chip and Joanna Gaines’ To Develop A Series Around “Bionic” One-Armed Chef Eduardo Garcia

When Chip and Joanna Gaines learned about Eduardo Garcia, a Montana chef who lost his arm in a freak electrical accident while he was hunting, they were “captivated by [his] story.” And now the couple have given him a platform to tell his incredible story of triumph on their Magnolia Network, which will be a rebranded version of the DIY Network come 2021. While speaking to Garcia on their Road To Launch YouTube series, the Gaineses revealed that we’d be hearing a lot more from Garcia as part of the Magnolia Storytellers project that will air on the network.

Garcia grew up in Bozeman, Montana, and began his career as a private chef and founder of a food line called Montana Mex. In October, 2011, while on a hunting trip, he attempted to cut the remains of a bear carcass with a knife, not realizing the bear’s body was covering a power line, which his knife severed, electrocuting him with 2400 volts and causing him to lose a portion of his arm. While undergoing treatment for his injuries, he was also diagnosed with testicular cancer, which he spent time undergoing chemotherapy for. While Garcia primarily uses a hook outfitted on his left hand, he also received a bionic hand, which earned him the nickname Bionic Chef.

The Eduardo Garcia Project (possibly a working title, who knows, Garcia jokes) is a chronicle of how the last ten years of rehabilitation, perseverance and transition have made him into the renowned, sustainable chef he is now. Through Garcia’s show, he hopes to inspire others who may also have faced adversity, and show that it’s possible to come out on the other side better than before. (Thank you for coming to his TED Talk. Oh wait, he has a TED Talk.) As Chip and Jo write on Instagram, “You’ll see Eduardo’s incredible bond with nature and food on his newly-announced #MagnoliaNetwork project, where he’ll create memorable meals with others who defied the odds and have a story to tell.”

No premiere date for Garcia’s show has been officially announced yet. In the meantime, you can follow Garcia on Instagram at @chefeduardogarcia.
