‘The Vow’ Renewed for Season 2

The Vow isn’t done telling its story just yet. HBO announced today that the hit docuseries has been renewed for Season 2 and will continue with another installment following the power, pull and eventual downfall of the NXIVM cult. While Season 1 introduced us to the inner workings of the organization and its members, like Mark Vicente and Sarah Edmonson, future episodes will dive deeper into the world of leader Keith Raniere.

According today’s HBO press release, The Vow Season 2 is “set against the backdrop of the federal trial of The United States against Keith Raniere.”  In the upcoming season, we can look forward to an “exclusive view into Raniere’s innermost circle,” with “stories of NXIVM’s top leadership in the US and Mexico,” and “powerful, intimate stories of DOS members.”

“Part Two follows the legal and emotional journeys of the group’s founders, supporters and defectors as new evidence and stunning revelations come to light while federal prosecutors and defense attorneys battle for opposing views of justice in a case caught in the national spotlight.”

In 2019, Raniere was convicted of racketeering, sex trafficking, forced labor conspiracy, identity theft, and production and possession of child pornography. He’s currently awaiting his sentencing, which is scheduled for Oct. 27. Prosectors are arguing he should receive life in prison for his crimes.

Emmy-winning and Academy Award nominated directors and producers Jehane Noujaim and Karim Amer are both returning for Season 2 of The Vow. Since its premiere this summer, the show has landed on Decider’s monthly ranking of Top TV Shows twice, making the list in both August and September.

In his review of The Vow, Decider’s Joel Keller praised the series for its honest depiction of NXIVM. “The Vow benefits from access to people like Vicente and Edmondson, plus lots of footage from various NXIVM organizational videos, meetings, and other insightful stuff,” he wrote. “It creates a picture of the organization that makes it more than just the ‘sex cult’ that was in headlines about it in 2018.”

While an official premiere date hasn’t been announced, Season 2 of The Vow will once again stream on HBO Max. You can catch Part One of the Season 1 finale on HBO Max and HBO Now this Sunday, Oct. 18, at  10/9c.
