‘Dawson’s Creek’, Minus the Theme Song, Will Come to Netflix Nov. 1

Dawson’s Creek is finally landing on Netflix again after a long hiatus. The hit series will make its way back to the streaming service Nov. 1, bringing all of the high school and college drama of the Capeside crew along with it. Netflix made the announcement on Twitter today, writing, “Dawson’s Creek — one of television’s most beloved coming-of-age stories — is coming to Netflix in The US on November 1 …and before you ask, the episodes won’t have the original theme song (sorry).”

While the series will be added in full, like Netflix pointed out, the famous theme song won’t be a part of Dawson’s Creek. When the series first aired on the WB in 1998, it came along with the soundtrack of Paula Cole’s “I Don’t Want to Wait.” Now, because Sony didn’t make continuous deals with some of the musicians featured in Dawson’s Creek, the original music isn’t featured in the show on streaming or DVD.

Still, we’ll be seeing the original gang in all their 90s glory, including stars James Van Der Beek (Dawson Leery), Katie Holmes (Joey Potter), Michelle Williams (Jen Lindley), Joshua Jackson (Pacey Witter) and Mary Beth Peil (Evelyn ‘Grams’ Ryan), just without Cole’s music to set the mood — instead, you’ll hear Jann Arden’s “Run Like Mad.”

When Dawson’s Creek fans heard the news on Twitter, their reaction was mixed. Some expressed excitement that the show would be back, with one writing, “Love this show!!! I could watch the whole series all over again. Great acting.” Another added, “Already have the box set. Will I still be watching? You bet your ass I will be!,” while one more fan wrote, “Probably my favorite show of all time. So good.”

Still, not everyone was thrilled with Netflix’s Dawson’s Creek news. “The theme song was the best part of this show so… hard pass,” one fan wrote.

During an interview with Entertainment Weekly  in 2018, Van Der Beek explained why the original tunes weren’t still included.  “Sony did not make deals with all the musicians in perpetuity,” he said. “It’d be cool if someone figured out a way to put that actual original music back in the show. So if anybody at Sony is listening, it would be nice if they put the original music back in!”

But even Van Der Beek has a complicated relationship with “I Don’t Want to Wait,” admitting that he “hides” when he hears the famous song. At least he won’t have to worry about hearing it any time soon, and especially not on Netflix next month.
