‘End of the F**king World’ Creator Jonathan Entwistle Tackling ‘Power Rangers’ TV, Movie Universe

After crafting some hit dramas for Netflix, Jonathan Entwistle is pivoting in an entirely new direction for his next project. Entertainment One (eOne), Hasbro’s entertainment studio, announced today that the producer and director will help create new Power Rangers content for both film and TV, making the jump from dark comedy to an action superhero franchise.

As part of the new deal, Entwistle will direct the Power Rangers movies and series, and eOne will develop and produce the upcoming projects.

“Jonathan has an incredible creative vision for this iconic and hugely successful franchise, and is hands down the right architect to join us as we reimagine the television and film worlds of this property,” said Nick Meyer, President, Film, eOne and Michael Lombardo, President, Global Television, eOne, in a joint statement. “Across our slate, we are looking forward to working with the most talented storytellers as we take on Hasbro’s rich fan-favourite brands and build entertainment universes around them.”

In his own statement today, Entwistle added, “This is an unbelievable opportunity to deliver new Power Rangers to both new and existing generations of awaiting and adoring fans. We’ll bring the spirit of analog into the future, harnessing the action and storytelling that made this brand a success. I’m looking forward to working with the teams at eOne and Hasbro. Together, we can’t wait to share more Power Rangers with the world very soon.”

Before taking on the Power Rangers, Entwistle was known for his work on series like I Am Not Okay With This and The End of the F***ing World, both popular Netflix dramas that earned devoted fanbases and promising reviews from critics.

Audiences were first introduced to the Power Rangers as The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers in the 90s, when the TV series using footage from a Japanese children’s show first aired in 1993 on Fox Kids. Later, in 1995, a Power Rangers movie came to theaters. The most recent installment in the franchise was 2017’s Power Rangers featuring Bryan Cranston, Bill Hader and Dacre Montgomery.
