Despite COVID, Netflix Hopes To Have More Shows And Movies in 2021

Don’t worry, Netflix subscribers. The streaming platform has plenty more in store, despite the coronavirus pandemic. While multiple networks have had to change up their broadcast schedules, and films have postponed production due to the virus, Netflix is carrying on.  Variety reports that the streaming giant will continue to produce original content next year and bring users more shows and movies.

“Netflix said it still expects to launch more originals in 2021 than this year, even with the suspension of productions because of COVID,” Variety reports. According to the outlet, Netflix told shareholders, “[W]e’re confident that we’ll have an exciting range of programming for our members, particularly relative to other entertainment service options.”

Variety also reports that Netflix says it’s making “good and careful progress returning to production” during the pandemic. The company has resumed production on fan favorite sci-fi series Stranger Thingswhich is now in Season 4, and is also restarting production on the original action film Red Notice with Dwayne Johnson, Gal Gadot and Ryan Reynolds. Netflix is also filming Season 2 of The Witcher, Henry Cavill’s fantasy series.

Netflix says it’s completed principal photography on over 50 of its original productions since mid-March, and is “optimistic we will complete shooting on over 150 other productions by year-end.”

The news comes after Netflix cut ties with some popular series, cancelling shows like The Society, I Am Not Okay With This, and Teenage Bounty Hunters, and earlier today, the Hilary Swank drama Away. In a surprising announcement, Netflix also canceled the popular comedy series GLOW ahead of Season 4, citing production costs  during the pandemic.

“We’ve made the difficult decision not to do a fourth season of GLOW due to COVID, which makes shooting this physically intimate show with its large ensemble cast especially challenging,” a Netflix spokesperson said in a statement to Deadline. “We are so grateful to creators Liz Flahive and Carly Mensch, Jenji Kohan and all the writers, cast and crew for sharing this story about the incredible women of GLOW with us and the world.”
