Jared Leto to Play The Joker in HBO Max’s Snyder Cut

Jared Leto is getting a second chance with his Joker character. The actor, who originally stepped into the iconic role for 2016’s Suicide Squad, will don the dramatic makeup once again and dip into the green hair dye as The Joker for Zack Snyder’s Justice League miniseries coming to HBO Max, The Hollywood Reporter reports.

The Snyder Cut is set to premiere in 2021 in four episodes, and reshoots, which reportedly cost as much as $70 million, are currently underway with Ben Affleck, Ray Fisher, Amber Heard and others. Originally, the new version wasn’t supposed to include any fresh footage, but the plan to edit the miniseries using special effects was scrapped when reshoots began. And if you needed more proof that the Snyder Cut is filming new footage, just look to Leto’s casting.

Leto’s addition marks a major change for the Snyder Cut of Justice League, since his character was not included in the original 2017 movie. Now, the Snyder Cut is linked to Suicide Squad, which Snyder also executive produced with his wife, Deborah Snyder. Leto’s Joker had a brief appearance in Suicide Squad, since most of his scenes were left out of the final cut of the film.

As the Joker in Suicide Squad, Leto made headlines for his behavior on set. The actor stayed in character while filming, and even sent some of his costars “gifts,” including a live rat for Margot Robbie, who played Harley Quinn in the film. A couple of years later, when Todd Phillips’ Joker with Joaquin Phoenix was greenlit by Warner Bros., Leto was reportedly “alienated and upset” over the move, and hoped to cancel the movie before it moved forward.

The Hollywood Reporter also reports that both Jon Berg and Geoff Johns, former studio executives who were involved in the original Justice League movie and Joss Whedon reshoot, are removing their names from the Snyder Cut, since neither worked on the new version. According to sources, “the move pays respect to Snyder’s creative vision and the additional photography shoot.”
