Scarlett Johansson Will Play an ‘Ideal Wife’ in ‘Bride’ on Apple TV+

Scarlett Johansson‘s latest project brings her to Apple TV+. The Marriage Story actress is set to produce and star in Bride, a “genre bending” film, IndieWire reports. Oscar-winning director Sebastián Lelio, the man behind films like Gloria Bell and A Fantastic Woman, is set to direct the film, which comes from Apple and A24.

Bride follows a perfect woman who’s been created by “an obsessive and brilliant entrepreneur” as the “ideal wife.” The woman rejects her creator and runs away from him, leaving her “confined existence” in favor of “a world that sees her as a monstrous other.” It’s only after she leaves her maker that she’s able to truly discover who she is and craft her own identity. Bride comes from co-writers Lelio, Lauren Schuker Blum, and Rebecca Angelo.

Johansson’s upcoming film marks the latest collaboration between A24 and Apple TV+. Sofia Coppola’s On The Rocks, a father-daughter drama starring Bill Murray and Rashida Jones, premieres in theaters and on the streaming service tomorrow, Oct. 23. Apple first announced their partnership with A24 in 2018, which was described as a “multiyear agreement” with multiple films. Next up is The Sky Is Everywherean adaptation of Jandy Nelson’s novel starring Cherry Jones, Jason Segel and Grace Kaufman.

Johansson’s last film release was 2019’s Jojo Rabbit, in which she played Rosie, Jojo’s mother. Johansson was nominated for a Screen Actors Guild Award, a Critics’ Choice Award and an Academy Award for the role. We can also expect to see her in Marvel’s  Black Widow as the titular character. Although the film was originally slated for a 2020 release, it’s since been shifted to May 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Lelio, the Bride director, is known for the 2013 film Gloria, which he later adapted into Gloria Bell with Julianne Moore. He’s also directed Disobedience, a 2017 romance starring Rachel Weisz and Rachel McAdams. Lelio took home an Oscar in 2018, making history when his drama A Fantastic Woman became the first Chilean film to win Best Foreign Film.
