David Fincher Crushes Our Hopes for ‘Mindhunter’ Season 3

It’s time to say goodbye to Mindhunter for now. David Fincher‘s serial killer drama is calling it quits after two seasons on Netflix, Vulture reports. While it’s been over a year since the most recent season was released, Season 3 was put on “indefinite hold” in January and the show’s leads, Jonathan Groff, Holt McCallany, and Anna Torv, had been released from their contracts. Now, we finally know the series’ fate.

Fincher, Mindhunter‘s executive producer and director, confirmed the news in an interview published today, telling the outlet, “We lived there for almost three years. Not year in and year out, but … probably six or seven months a year … Mindhunter was a lot for me.”

At the beginning of Season 2, Fincher decided to scrap the content altogether, explaining that he “ended up looking at what was written and deciding I didn’t like any of it, so we tossed it and started over.” And although he brought on former Mindhunter assistant director Courtenay Miles to work with him as his co-showrunner, he admitted that the “90-hour” work week “absorbs everything in your life.”  “When I got done, I was pretty exhausted, and I said, ‘I don’t know if I have it in me right now to break season three,'” Fincher said.

But it wasn’t only the time commitment that made Fincher reconsider a third season of Mindhunter — it sounds like the budget was a concern, too. “Listen, for the viewership that it had, it was a very expensive show,” Fincher said. “We talked about, ‘Finish Mank [Fincher’s upcoming Netflix film] and then see how you feel,’ but I honestly don’t think we’re going to be able to do it for less than I did season two. And on some level, you have to be realistic — dollars have to equal eyeballs.”

While Fincher sounds pretty convinced there won’t be a Mindhunter Season 3, there could be some hope, at least down the line. When Vulture reached out to a Netflix spokesperson about the future of the series, they offered a sliver of hope to Mindhunter fans. There’s no Season 3 currently in the works, they said, but “Maybe in five years.”
