Will There Be a ‘Borat 3’?

Can you think of a better way to celebrate the end of the week than by watching Sacha Baron Cohen humiliate Mike Pence and Rudy Giuliani on camera? I sure can’t! If that sounds like most enjoyable entertainment to you, then go ahead and stream Borat Subsequent Moviefilm: Delivery of Prodigious Bribe to American Regime for Make Benefit Once Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan—and yes, that really is the title—on Amazon Prime Video.

Cohen surprised Borat fans—and he also surprised quite a few of the real-life participants in the film—with the announcement that he’d film a sequel to his hit 2006 comedy Borat, totally in secret, over the summer in 2020. Of course, it’s hard to keep a project that involves large-scale pranks a secret. Some began to suspect that a new Borat project was in the works after Cohen crashed a conservative rally in Washington and led the crowd in a racist song. In September, rumors circulated that a new Borat film had been completed and screened for industry insiders. (Seth Rogen tweeted earlier this week that he had already watched the film six times.)

But even if it hadn’t been filmed in secret, the news of a Borat sequel 14 years later is surprising given that Cohen had previously said he was “killing” both his Borat and Ali G characters, because they were now too well-known and therefore could no longer trick people. But he found a way around that for Borat Subsequent Moviefilm, which was directed by Jason Woliner, with the help of added “American” disguises, and by creating a new sidekick character: Borat’s 15-year-old daughter, played by Bulgarian actress Maria Bakalova.

So now that Cohen has resurrected Borat for a sequel, one question remains…

Will there be a Borat 3?

There has been no official news on whether or not Borat 3 is happening. Both Cohen and Bakalova have done very limited press for Borat Subsequent Moviefilm. Cohen spoke to the New York Times before the film’s release, and both Cohen and Bakalova made an in-character appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! this week, but in neither instance did they hint that they might be looking for another sequel. But if Borat 2 has taught us anything, it’s never say never. I certainly wouldn’t say no to a Tutar spin-off.

In the meantime, you can always rewatch Borat 2, and then read Decider’s break down of how Cohen pulled off those real-life pranks.
