Adam Sandler to Team Up With ‘Chernobyl’ Director for Netflix’s ‘The Spaceman of Bohemia’ Adaptation

Sounds like Adam Sandler is trading in his Hubie Halloween humor for another serious drama. The Uncut Gems actor is set to star in an adaptation of “The Spaceman of Bohemia” for an upcoming film from Chernobyl director Johan Renck, Deadline reports. Sandler’s new role will bring him back to Netflix, where his new Halloween comedy recently debuted.

“The Spaceman of Bohemia” project is adapted from a novel of the same name by author Jaroslav Kalfar. The still-untitled film follows “an astronaut (Sandler) sent to the edge of the galaxy to collect mysterious ancient dust. He soon finds his earthly life falling to pieces and he turns to the only voice who can help him try to put it back together. It just so happens to belong to a creature from the beginning of time lurking in the shadows of his ship.”

Sandler’s new movie comes from producers Channing Tatum, Reid Carolin, Peter Kiernan and Michael Parets, as well as Tim Headington, Lia Buman and Max Silva. Ben Ormand, Renck and Barry Bernardi are all listed as executive producers on the upcoming project.

“As we prepare for our voyage to Chopra, I couldn’t be more pleased to have found the perfect partner in Adam,” Renck said. “And now, with the support of the brilliant Netflix family, I am profoundly excited to set off on our impossible journey.” The director, who won two Emmy Awards for his most recent work, HBO’s miniseries Chernobyl, has previously directed episodes of Bloodline, Bates Motel, Breaking Bad, The Walking Dead and more.

“The Spaceman of Bohemia” adaptation strengthens Sandler’s relationship with Netflix, where he’s had a deal since 2015. In the past, he’s brought films like Murder Mystery and Sandy Wexler to the streaming platform, and his projects The Meyerowitz Stories and Uncut Gems are both part of the Netflix library. Next up for Sandler is Hustle, his sports comedy and latest Netflix project.
