Christian Serratos Is the Queen of Tejano Music in ‘Selena: The Series’ Trailer

Netflix is sharing their own take on the story of a Tejano music legend. The streaming platform debuted the first full-length trailer for their upcoming show, Selena: The Series, today, giving us a glimpse at Christian Serratos in the role of iconic Mexican-American musician Selena Quintanilla.

Today’s trailer teases Selena’s beginnings as a young girl growing up in Texas who loved to sing, all the way to the start of her career and later, her soaring success. “If you stand around and wait for what you want, you’re going to be waiting your whole life,” her father, Abraham Quintanilla (Ricardo Chavira) tells Selena in today’s trailer. “You have to go and get it.”

We also see scenes of her touring with her band, Los Dinos, and her budding romance with her lead guitarist. Her sister cautions Selena, “You can’t like him. I mean it, dad would freak out.” Of course, the trailer also features performance after performance of hits like “Baila Esta Cumbia” and “Como La Flor” from stages packed with adoring fans. But Selena: The Series isn’t all rosy recreations of the singer’s life. Today’s trailer also hints at the tension brewing behind the scenes as Selena’s fame grows. In 1995, just before her 24th birthday, Selena was shot and killed by Yolanda Saldívar, her friend and former manager.

The series’ official description reads: Before she became the Queen of Tejano Music, Selena Quintanilla was a young girl from Texas with big dreams and an even bigger voice. The two-part coming-of-age drama Selena: The Series explores the once-in-a-generation performer’s journey as a young artist, from singing small gigs in Corpus Christi with her family to becoming one of the most successful Latin artists of all time — and the years of grit and sacrifice the Quintanilla family navigated together before Selena’s meteoric rise to fame.

Selena: The Series, which comes from American Crime’s Moises Zamora and This Is Us‘ Don Todd, also stars Gabriel Chavarria, Noemí Gonzalez, and Seidy López. The series comes after another project about Selena’s life and death, 1997’s Selena, a drama about the late singer starring Jennifer Lopez and Edward James Olmos.

Selena: The Series will debut on Netflix in two parts, with the first premiering Dec. 4. Watch the full trailer for Selena: The Series in the video above.
