What Is Blood of Zeus?

Have you ever wanted an anime to dive into Greek mythology? Well, that’s finally happening. Originally titled Gods & Heroes, Netflix’s latest original anime is an adaptation of the video game of the same name.

The series follows a young man known as Heron. After he’s cast aside from his people Heron learns that he’s the illegitimate son of Zeus. He also comes to realize that he’s  the only one capable of saving the Heavens and the Earth by defeating the demons that threaten to enslave everything. Can he save the world and restore balance? Or will a nefarious goddess finally end him?

What Else Has Powerhouse Animation Studios Produced?

If Blood of Zeus looks familiar to you, it’s for a good reason. The series was produced by Powerhouse Animation Studio, the same studio that brought you Netflix’s excellent Castlevania adaptation. Powerhouse has also produced OK K.O.! Let’s Be Heroes, The Adventures of Kid Danger, Seis Manos, and Epithet Erased.

Who Does Jessica Henwick Play in Blood of Zeus?

Henwick plays Alexia, a trained warrior who befriends Heron. She becomes a major part of his journey as well as one of his biggest allies. Prior to starring in the animated series Henwick played Nymeria Sand in HBO’s Game of Thrones. She also starred as the X-wing pilot Jessika Pava in Star Wars: The Force Awakens as well as Colleen Wing in Marvel’s Iron Fist, The Defenders, and Luke Cage. It’s safe to say that Henwick’s nerd cred is pretty strong.

Who Else Is in Blood of Zeus‘ Cast?

Friday Night Lights’ Derek Phillips plays the reluctant hero Heron. The new Netflix original also stars Jason O’Mara as Zeus, Claudia Christian as Hera, Mamie Gummer as Electra, and Chris Diamantopoulos as Evios.

Was Heron a Real Figure in Greek Mythology?

Sort of. Zeus’ human-born demigod son is typically referred to as Hercules. There was a famous Heron in Greek history, Hero of Alexandria, also known as Heron of Alexandria. But instead of gaining fame for fighting demons and talking to gods this Heron was known for being one of the great mathematicians, engineers, and experimenters of his time.

In Blood of Zeus Heron is supposed to be a mythological figure people have forgotten. Because we don’t know his story, there’s a lot more room for surprises in this new epic.
