A Live-Action ‘Assassin’s Creed’ Series is Coming to Netflix

One of the most beloved video game franchises of all time is coming to Netflix. Today it was announced that Netflix and Ubisoft will be teaming up to create a live action version of Assassin’s Creed, so get ready for ancient wars, secret societies, and some absolutely fabulous cloaks.

This deal will allow for multiple installations in this universe, much like what Netflix has done with The Witcher books and video game series. In a press release the streaming giant mentioned it was looking into adaptations “of live action, animated, and anime series.” But the first series in development is set to be a live-action epic that will bend genres.

“For more than 10 years, millions of fans around the world have helped shape the Assassin’s Creed brand into an iconic franchise,” Jason Altman, Head of Ubisoft Film and Television in Los Angeles, said in a press release. “We’re thrilled to create an Assassin’s Creed series with Netflix and we look forward to developing the next saga in the Assassin’s Creed universe.”

“We’re excited to partner with Ubisoft and bring to life the rich, multilayered storytelling that Assassin’s Creed is beloved for,” Peter Friedlander, Vice President of Netflix Original Series, added. “From its breathtaking historical worlds and massive global appeal as one of the best selling video game franchises of all time, we are committed to carefully crafting epic and thrilling entertainment based on this distinct IP and provide a deeper dive for fans and our members around the world to enjoy.”

Released in 2007, the first Assassin’s Creed game chronicled the battle for peace between the free will-loving Assassins and the controlling Templars. This fictional battle was set against the real Third Crusade of the Holy Land. Every game since then other games have adopted this format, using fictionalized versions of historical events as a backdrop for the franchise’s central war. And it’s a format that works. Since its release the video game series has sold more than 155 million games worldwide and has produced over 20 gaming titles. It’s even garnered critical acclaim, gaining wide praise for its innovative gameplay and storytelling structure.

Unfortunately, the same can’t be said for the franchise’s first attempt at live action. In 2016 Michael Fassbender starred in a live-action theatrical film about this world. The movie was poorly received by critics and was a box office bomb, losing an estimated $75 to $100 million.

But maybe Netflix can be the one to change this franchise’s fate. We’ve seen how Netflix has turned the tide for video game adaptations. If the streaming giant can make Castlevania and The Witcher great, there’s hope it can save a live-action version of Assassin’s Creed as well.
