At long last the Narcos news you’ve been waiting for has finally arrived. Today Netflix confirmed that it will be moving ahead with Narcos: Mexico Season 3. This new installment will pick up after the alliance-dissolving chaos from last season. But this new season comes with some fairly significant changes.

After serving as showrunner for three seasons of Narcos and two seasons of Narcos: Mexico, Eric Newman will be stepping down for this new installment. He will be passing his day-to-day showrunning duties to his longtime collaborator and Narcos co-creator, Carlo Bernard. Though Newman will still produce Narcos: Mexico, the showrunning shift has less to do with the series’ future than with Newman’s. The Narcos creator and Bright producer is part of a multi-year deal with Netflix. He will be stepping down from Narcos to focus on the streaming giant’s previously announced opioid drama Painkiller, Escape From Spiderhead, which will star Chris Hemsworth and Miles Teller, as well as The Upper World starring Daniel Kaluuya.

“I am grateful for my five years at the helm of Narcos and Narcos: Mexico and am immensely proud of what this spectacular team has achieved with these shows,” Newman said in a press release. “Carlo Bernard is the first person I ever spoke to about this project, over ten years ago, and I am extremely pleased to leave the steering of Season 3 of Narcos: Mexico in his very capable hands.”

That’s not the only major change. This new season will feature two episodes directed by Wagner Moura, Narcos‘ chilling Pablo Escobar. Moura was the first drug lord to haunt viewers. The role even earned Moura a Golden Globe nomination. Additionally Andrés Baiz, Alejandra Marquez, Luis Ortega, and Amat Escalante are also set to direct.

So what is this new season going to be about? Set in the ’90s after the collapse of Félix Gallardo’s cartel empire, this installment will follow the drug trade’s war for the globalization. In the midst of the alliance’s collapse, a group of newly independent cartels will have to figure out how to survive in an increasingly hostile political landscape. Against this backdrop a new generation of Mexican kingpins will emerge.

Do you know what that sounds like? It sounds like we’re about to dive into the El Chapo leg of this druggie story.

This new season will see several returning faces. Scoot McNairy will reprise his role as DEA Agent Walt Breslin, and José Maria Yazpik will return as Amado Carrillo Fuentes, one of Narcos‘ longest running characters. Alberto Ammann (Cali Cartel leader Hélmer “Pacho” Herrera), Alfonso Dosal (Tijuana Cartel leader Benjamín Arellano Félix), Mayra Hermosillo (Tijuana Cartel leader Enedina Arellano Félix), Manuel Masalva (Tijuana Cartel leader Ramón Arellano Félix), Alejandro Edda (Sinaloa Cartel leader Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán), Gorka Lasaosa (Sinaloa Cartel leader Héctor Luis Palma Salazar), and Matt Letscher (DEA head Jaime Kuykendall) are also set to return.

It has yet to be announced when Narcos: Mexico Season 3 will premiere. But you better believe we’ll be ready for it.
