Get those biscuits ready! Critically-acclaimed and all-around delightful comedy Ted Lasso has been renewed for a third season at Apple TV+. The early renewal comes just a few weeks after Ted Lasso wrapped its first season, and more than two months before the comedy begins production on Season 2 in London in early January. Clearly, Ted Lasso fever has overtaken Apple (and Team Decider).
Ted Lasso stars Jason Sudeikis as, you guessed it, Ted Lasso, a small-time college football coach hired to coach a Premier League soccer team in England. Lasso knows absolutely nothing about soccer, but that doesn’t stop him from trying his darndest to turn the faltering AFC Richmond program around and save them from relegation to a less prestigious league. With his boundless positivity and kind-hearted charm, the football coach manages to turn everyone around him into a believer, even the team’s stern owner, Rebecca Welton (Hannah Waddingham).
Sudeikis and Waddingham lead an all-star cast that also includes Brendan Hunt as Coach Beard, Lasso’s right-hand man; Brett Goldstein as club veteran Roy Kent; Juno Temple as Keeley Jones, model and team groupie; Phil Dunster as ego-centric young star Jamie Tartt; Nick Mohammed as kit man Nathan Shelley; and Jeremy Swift as Higgins, Rebecca’s AFC Richmond sycophant.
Ted Lasso debuted to little fanfare on August 14, but it quickly established itself as one of the most buzzed-about series of the late-summer and early-fall. The comedy series debuted at #2 on Decider’s Best TV Shows of August 2020 list before jumping up to the top spot the following month. As I wrote in our Best TV Shows of September 2020 list, “Ted Lasso remains the only pleasant surprise of this garbage fire of a year.”
Apple has yet to release any additional details about Ted Lasso Season 3, and it’s likely that we’ll be waiting quite a while for it. The comedy’s second season is scheduled to begin shooting early next year, which means that fans won’t get to see Ted Lasso back in action until later in 2021. If that pattern holds (January production start, late-summer release), Season 3 won’t hit Apple TV+ until 2022. Cue that Roy rage…
