Wheel of Fortune is about to get some serious star power. The long-running gameshow is getting its very own primetime spinoff at ABC titled Celebrity Wheel of Fortune, Variety reports. And before you panic, don’t worry — the new series will feature some fresh famous faces, but it’s also bringing along original Wheel hosts Pat Sajak and Vanna White to keep the show running smoothly.
This time around, the format of the game show will remain the same, with celebs guessing the show’s famous word puzzles, but the grand prize is being tweaked a bit — competitors will be playing to win up to $1 million dollars, which will then be donated to the charity of their choosing. Celebrity Wheel of Fortune comes from Mike Richards, the producer behind other hit game shows like the original Wheel of Fortune, Jeopardy and The Price is Right.
The celebrity spinoff marks the first time Wheel will land a primetime spot after years of talk of a possible move. And Wheel just may have Jeopardy to thank, which aired a highly successful Jeopardy! The Greatest of All Time primetime show led by host Alex Trebek on ABC this past winter.
Wheel is the latest game show to land a flashy celebrity edition after both The Price Is Right at Night and Let’s Make A Deal got their own star-studded spinoff shows. And it’s the most recent ABC game show to score a primetime spin, with The $100,000 Pyramid, Card Sharks, Celebrity Family Feud, Match Game and Press Your Luck all previously moving to primetime.
Wheel of Fortune, which aired on both NBC and CBS before its run onABC, is currently in its 38th season. The show still remains extremely popular, with an average of 8 million nightly viewers, and has been renewed through the 2022-23 season.
