Kelly Clarkson Nails Steven Tyler’s Falsetto in Amazing “Dream On” Cover

Classic rock has officially made its way to Kellyoke. On Monday’s episode of The Kelly Clarkson Show, singer Kelly Clarkson and her band performed a rocking cover of Aerosmith’s “Dream On” that will have even the biggest fans banging their heads. Sing for the year? More like song for the year, am I right?

Clarkson’s Kellyoke segments typically exist comfortably in the pop or folk/country music genres, but this week, she stepped outside of her comfort zone to take on legendary rock band Aerosmith. Standing on an empty stage, her figure shrouded in darkness, Clarkson belted out the first verse of “Dream On” before skipping ahead to the chorus. “Sing with me, sing for the year. Sing for the laughter, sing for the tear,” she sang, as the guitars swelled around her. “Sing with me, just for today. Maybe tomorrow, the good Lord will take you away…”

The American Idol alum could’ve gone the easy route and sang the “Dream On” refrain in her usual key, but, of course, she didn’t. Instead, she picked up the tempo and geared up for Steven Tyler’s iconic falsetto bridge, which she obviously nailed. Is there anything this singer turned Voice judge turned talk show host can’t do?

Clarkson concluded her brief performance (the entire video is under two minutes long) with one final chorus and a banging guitar riff from her band, Y’all. Her then treated her to a round of applause so raucous you would never know they were virtual.

Monday’s Kellyoke performance of “Dream On” isn’t the only thread that connects Clarkson and Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler. In 2011, Tyler joined the American Idol judging panel, but he only remained on the show for two seasons. Still, a little bit of American Idol is better than no American Idol — just ask Clarkson, whose Season 1 victory catapulted her to music (and now TV) stardom.
