Emily Blunt and Jamie Dornan Are Irish Lovers in ‘Wild Mountain Thyme’ Trailer

John Patrick Shanley is bringing back Moonstruck, but trading Cher’s New York twang for Christopher Walken‘s Irish lilt. The first trailer for the writer-director’s latest film, a romance titled Wild Mountain Thyme, officially dropped today, teasing a charming love story about two childhood friends who are meant to be together.

Emily Blunt and Jamie Dornan star as Wild Mountain Thyme‘s Rosemary and Anthony, would-be lovers who can’t seem to catch a break. “The headstrong farmer Rosemary Muldoon (Blunt) has her heart set on winning her neighbor Anthony Reilly’s love. The problem is Anthony (Dornan) seems to have inherited a family curse, and remains oblivious to his beautiful admirer. Stung by his father Tony Reilly’s (Walken) plans to sell the family farm to his American nephew (Jon Hamm), Anthony is jolted into pursing his dreams in this comedic, moving and wildly romantic tale,” the film’s official description reads.

Wild Mountain Thyme is still weeks from its official release date, but plenty of people have already made up their mind about the movie just from its two-minute trailer. After Rotten Tomatoes posted the trailer on their Twitter account, the internet promptly roasted Blunt and Walken, who, in their defense, are giving their all to make an Irish accent work. And even though Dornan is from the country, he wasn’t spared any criticism, either.

“This a crime against Irish accents and one of the people in the film is Irish,” one person tweeted. Another wrote, “I can’t wrap my head around this like we know Jamie Dornan can do an Irish accent he did a grand one in the siege of jadotville… did they literally tell him to do the Irish accent Americans want to hear bcos what else could it be.”

One commenter even questioned, “Is this a parody?” adding, “Even Jamie Dornan’s Irish accent is awful,” while this viewer had a simple request after watching the Wild Mountain Thyme trailer: “As an Irish person I beg Hollywood to please stop.”

Blunt, who is British, and Dornan, who is from Northern Ireland, sat down for an interview with People last month ahead of the Wild Mountain Thyme release. “We were both sort of thrown in at the deep end having to do an accent that was unfamiliar,” Blunt said at the time. “I’ll admit, I’m sure I had a tougher time with it than he did initially, but he’s not usually one to give people tips, he’s the most unpresumptuous person ever. But he assured me that I sounded Irish and I’m going to believe him. So if he’s wrong, I’m going to blame him for any backlash on my accent. He has assured me it was a great Irish accent. We’ll see.”

Thankfully, Hamm spares us all and doesn’t attempt even the faintest accent. Wild Mountain Thyme comes to theaters and VOD Dec. 11. Watch the full trailer in the video above.
