Amazon Cancels ‘Utopia’ After Just One Season

Amazon has canceled Gillian Flynn‘s drama series Utopia starring John Cusack after just one season. It took more than six years for the series to debut on television screens.

The show, which was originally developed by Flynn and David Fincher and picked up straight to series in 2014 at HBO, is a drama about a group of comic book fans who come across a deadly pandemic (timely, huh?). The series landed at Amazon four years later, however, Fincher dropped off the production team.

While Amazon doesn’t normally release viewership totals, the drama received lackluster reviews after its premiere on September 25 last year. The series also only scored a 51 percent rating among critics on RottenTomatoes.com.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Cusack starred in the nine-episode remake of Dennis Kelly’s British series of the same name. The cast also included Sasha Lane, Rainn Wilson, Ashleigh LaThrop, Desmin Borges, Farrah Mackenzie and Christopher Denham. Utopia was best-selling author Gillian Flynn’s first stint as showrunner. Jessica Rhoades (Sharp Objects), Sharon Hall, Karen Wilson and Kelly executive produced the show with Flynn. Endemol Shine North America, its U.K. production studio Kudos and Amazon Studios teamed to produce the series.

The decision to cancel Utopia comes after Amazon just recently picked up sci-fi drama The Expanse for a sixth and final season. The major streamer has also decided to end Bosh and Goliath in 2021.
