‘Happiest Season’ Director Clea DuVall Also Had a ‘Broad City’ Stint

Clea DuVall is behind the camera for her latest project, the lesbian Christmas rom-com Happiest Seasonbut you’ve likely seen the talented director onscreen before watching her Hulu film. DuVall, who has appeared on shows like Better Call Saul, American Horror Story and Veep — where she played the stoic girlfriend to Catherine, Marjorie — has a long list of credits, but one of her more recent roles is getting some newfound attention.

Broad City fans, who said goodbye to their beloved Comedy Central series least year, will remember DuVall as Lesley Marnel, the sophisticated doctor who starts up a fling with Abbi (Abbi Jacobson) and gifts her that memorable, and sightly controversial, yellow hat. DuVall appeared on the series for three episodes beginning with the Season 5 episode “Artsy Fartsy.” Her character Lesley treats Abbi when she lands in the hospital after her catering gig. The two instantly hit it off, and Abbi works up the courage to ask for Lesley’s number.

The two of them continue their relationship in the next episode, “Lost and Found”, when Lesley gifts Abbi the hat, which she later admits isn’t for her. Lesley and Abbi stick together for another episode, but eventually break things off at the end of “Shenanigans” when Lesley, frustrated with Abbi’s lifestyle, ends their relationship.

DuVall gave a shoutout to the series and her costar on Instagram last year, sharing a clip of her breaking up Abbi and writing, “I honestly don’t know how I made it through this scene. I’ve loved Broad City since the first episode, and it was a blast getting to be on it, even though @abbijacobson made me look very unprofessional.”

Broad City Season 5 is now available to stream on Hulu, Comedy Central, and more. And if you haven’t streamed Happiest Season yet, you can find that on Hulu, too.
