Abby and Riley Are Inspiring Lots Of ‘Happiest Season’ Fanfiction

Everyone and their cousin had a Happiest Season hot take to share this weekend, but by far the most prevalent was that Kristen Stewart‘s character, Abby, should have dated Aubrey Plaza‘s character, Riley.

If you haven’t yet seen the lesbian Christmas rom-com that released on Hulu last week, then stop reading this right now because spoiler alert: Abby and Riley don’t end up together in Happiest Season. Instead, Abby stays with her girlfriend at the start of the movie, Harper (played by Mackenzie Davis), after Harper finally comes out to her parents (played by Mary Steenburgen and Victor Garber) as gay. Riley, meanwhile, finally gets an apology from Harper for treating her so poorly when they secretly dated in high school.

Most viewers probably weren’t surprised by this ending, but it didn’t stop them from shipping Abby and Riley, thanks to Stewart and Plaza’s obvious chemistry on screen. But you guys know the solution to rooting for a fictional couple that doesn’t get together in the end, right? Fanfiction! Even though the movie has been out mere days, naturally Happiest Season fanfiction is all over Archive of our Own (a.k.a. AO3) — and a content warning to you all, because the Abby/Riley Happiest Season fanfic section on AO3 isn’t as relatively clean as the movie itself.

Don’t have time at the moment for a nearly 12,000 word AU fanfic where Harper never came after Riley? Don’t worry, you can bookmark it for later — and also, Twitter has you covered. Here is just a handful of some of the best (and quickest) Happiest Season fanfics Twitter has to offer.

The one where Abby and Riley become ~intense texting buddies~ the second the movie ended.

The one where Riley and Abby reconnect after Abby leaves Harper at the altar.

The one where the Abby/Riley Happiest Season sequel gets written by Aubrey Plaza herself.

The one where Harper dates director and co-writer Clea DuVall instead.

In case you missed it, the final credits montage shows Riley with a girlfriend, played by none other than DuVall herself.

The one where Sloane ends up with Riley, actually.

The one where Abby and Riley getting together is a presidential decree.

The one where Abby and Harper get drunk together.

The one where they hook up and the one-sided longing begins.

No matter what you thought of the ending, I think we can all be thankful this holiday season to have a movie like Happiest Season, with so many hot queer lady characters to ship.
