Quibi Will Officially Shut Down Service Today

The Quibi experiment is officially coming to an end. According to the service’s FAQ site, Quibi will shut down today, December 1, just eight months after its launch. CEOs Jeffrey Katzenberg and Meg Whitman are reportedly exploring selling the rights to some of its content, but as of today, no deals have been announced.

Quibi first announced that it would be ceasing service “on or around December 1” in mid-October, when Katzenberg and Whitman officially pulled the plug on the short-lived platform. “At this time we do not know if the Quibi content will be available anywhere after our last day of service,” revealed the support site at the time (per Variety). “We recommend following #Quibi on Twitter for any news regarding content.”

An additional Quibi support page, “End of Service – FAQs,” offers supplemental information about how the shutdown will affect subscribers and free trial members. The site reveals that all free trials will end on December 1, regardless of their scheduled end date, and content will only be available to watch on the Quibi app until the final day of their current paid month or trial. After today, the Quibi app will remain on compatible devices until users delete it, but subscribers will not be able to sign in or access any content.

Unlike services like Netflix or HBO Max, Quibi does not own its originals, and its partner studios are now searching for new homes for their shows. Variety reports that CBS Studios is exploring selling Liam Hemsworth and Christoph Waltz action drama Most Dangerous Game, which Quibi renewed for a second season shortly before it shut down. Creators like Matt Rogers, host of Quibi’s Gayme Show, are also actively pitching their shows to other studios and streamers. And as Entertainment Strategy Guy wrote for Decider in October, it’s likely that “most of the shows will wind up back with the studios that produced it” due to complex licensing deals.

Rest in peace, Quibi. You won’t be missed, but you certainly were the talk of the town.
