7 Shows Like ‘The Undoing’ to Watch If You Loved the HBO Series

Warning: This article contains spoilers for The Undoing.

After six mysterious episodes, The Undoing finally came to an end on HBO this past Sunday and answered the question we had all been breaking our brains trying to solve for the past month: Who killed Elena Alves (Matilda De Angelis)? Well, it turns out the answer was staring us in the face all along and hiding under that forever charming Hugh Grant smile — it was Jonathan Fraser this whole time.

No matter how you feel about that controversial finale, we can finally let go of all of our bogus theories and know that Elena’s killer will be getting the punishment he deserves after all. You can’t hide behind that perfect job and earnest demeanor forever, Jonathan! The David E. Kelley miniseries may be over, but viewers aren’t quite ready to let go of yet. And although The Undoing is a dubbed a miniseries by HBO with only one season, we won’t totally rule out a possible Season 2.

In an interview with DeciderThe Undoing director Susanne Bier said there have been “no conversations” about a second season, but she’d still be up for the idea. “I would love to, but it’s totally and merely wishful thinking from my point of view,” she said. “I don’t think David [E. Kelley] has thought of it, and there’s been no conversations about it. Yeah, it would be great! But it’s not anywhere. It’s just a dream.”

While we’re crossing out fingers for that possible Season 2 of The Undoing, there’s plenty to watch in the meantime. Check out our list of shows the stream if you’re craving more murder mystery and courtroom drama.

'The Night Of'

Another HBO miniseries, The Night Of also focuses on the murder of a beautiful young woman, but the story diverges quickly after that. Riz Ahmed puts on an incredible performance as Naz, a college student in New York who wakes up after a night spent with a girl he just met to find her brutally murdered next to him, with no memory of what happened. As the prime suspect in the case, Naz awaits trial in custody at Rikers, where he finds an ally in Freddy (Michael K. Williams) and is assisted by his attorney, Jack Stone (John Turturro), but is transformed by his time and treatment behind bars.

'Big Little Lies'

Big Little Lies lands on this list for a few reasons, the first being that it comes from the same creator as The Undoing. This 2017 drama boasts a stellar cast — Nicole Kidman again, plus Reese Witherspoon, Zoe Kravitz, Shailene Woodley and Laura Dern — as a group of women living on the wealthy California coast who are forever bonded by a terrible secret they all keep. Unlike The Undoing, there are multiple seasons of Big Little Lies, with both Seasons 1 and 2 currently available on HBO and HBO Max.

It didn’t take long after The Undoing finale for the comparisons to SVU to roll in, and the commenters aren’t wrong — the HBO series does feel familiar to Dick Wolf’s long-running TV drama, but in a glossier New York City with a deeper dive into the characters. If you’re in the mood for more courtroom drama, Law & Order: SVU is just the place to find it. Mariska Hargitay stars as the unstoppable Olivia Benson, a detective who leads her squad on investigations into some especially heinous crimes that take place in the city.

This ABC drama has got all of the elements of The Undoing: a a powerful female lead with a cheating husband, the murder of his beautiful mistress, and a whole heap of courtroom drama. How to Get Away With Murder, a Shonda Rhimes series that ran on the network for 6 seasons, stars Viola Davis as Annalise Keating, an attorney and professional at a prestigious university who recruits five of her most promising students, the “Keating 5,” to intern at her law firm. When they find themselves unexpectedly wrapped up in a crime, the Keating 5 must use their collective wits to get out of it. HTGAWM is a juicy, fun watch, but it also made history when Davis became the first Black woman to win the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for her role on the show.

Netflix miniseries Unbelievable is another crime drama worth watching as a chaser to The Undoing. The Peabody award-winning series, which was also nominated for a Golden Globe earlier this year, stars Kaitlyn Dever as Marie Adler, a rape victim who is coerced into recanting her story and is charged with lying about rape. Two detectives, Grace Rasmussen (Toni Collette) and Karen Duvall (Merritt Wever) take on the case to uncover the real story of what happened to Marie. Unbelievable is based on a true story and inspired by the 2015 article “An Unbelievable Story of Rape” by T. Christian Miller and Ken Armstrong.

If The Undoing’s glimpse into New York high society had you hooked, then Succession is the only logical next series in your HBO queue. While Logan, the intimidating patriarch of the family and head of the company, is aging out of his role, his ambitious children try and plot their next move to claim their spot in the family and the business. Succession has premiered two critically-acclaimed seasons so far, and there’s more on the way with Season 3 in the works.
