‘The Voice’ Fans Outraged After Eight (!) Contestants Leave in One Night

The Voice is leaving no room for error this season. On Tuesday night, the singing competition knocked off not one, not two, but eight contestants as it cut down its pool from 17 to 9. Fans were understandably upset about the savage Live Playoffs elimination, and they were quick to express their disappointment that certain contestants went home while others — including a few “mediocre country singers” — remained.  One particularly frustrated viewer summed it up best: “That is bullshit.”

In previous years, The Voice‘s Live Playoffs have seen multiple contestants go home in a single night, but it’s rare to see eight (!) contestants depart. According to Yahoo, the only other time the contestant pool has dropped from 17 to 9 in one fell swoop was last season, when production was shut down due to COVID-19. However, despite having a stronger group this time around, The Voice opted to once again whittle things down early, which meant that fans had to say goodbye to many of their favorite contestants.

Throughout Tuesday’s episode, country singers like Tanner Gomes and Ben Allen consistently earned praise from the judges, while the season’s pop, alternative, and folk stars were left by the wayside. After watching her team perform, Gwen Stefani made the baffling decision to save Allen over Payge Turner, an alt performer with a voice unlike any of her fellow competitors’. “Oh my god, this is so hard!” she said, after saving Allen. “I swear, I’m just playing a game.”

Suffice it to say that fans weren’t too happy with Stefani’s games. “The Voice demographic with their obsession on (white male) mediocre country singers is ruining the show for everyone,” tweeted one viewer. “I can’t believe Gwen made the choice she did,” wrote another. “Gwen you made a huge mistake.”

Allen wasn’t the only country singer who was saved. Later in the show, viewers voted to save one of John Legend’s contestants, and — you guessed it — they opted for country crooner Bailey Rae. Once again, viewers at home voiced their displeasure with America’s pick. “I love country but that girl is the weakest country singer on the show,” said one fan. “Who the heck is voting?” asked another.

Will The Voice‘s country dominance continue? Tune in on Thursday, December 3 at 8/7c on NBC to find out!
