Discovery, welcome to the Streaming Wars. After almost a year of hype, Discovery has finally unveiled its new streaming service, discovery+, which will officially launch January 4, 2021. discovery+ will boast a impressive array of content from across the company’s portfolio, including new 90 Day Fiancé spinoffs, Magnolia Network programs featuring Chip and Joanna Gaines, nature docs from Sir David Attenborough, and more.

WHAT IS DISCOVERY PLUS?

Launching January 4, discovery+ is Discovery’s foray into the streaming arms race. The new streaming service will host over 55,000 episodes of Discovery Channel, Food Network, TLC, HGTV, ID, OWN, and Animal Planet shows, as well as exclusive originals from some of the brand’s most influential stars. According to execs, discovery+ plans to roll out more than 1,000 hours of original content in its first year, an incredibly impressive goal for any new streaming service.

IS DISCOVERY PLUS FREE?

While other new entrants into the Streaming Wars, including Peacock, offer free tiers, discovery+ will require a monthly subscription for most customers (more on that below). DISCOVERY PLUS PRICE SCALE: HOW MUCH DOES DISCOVERY PLUS COST?

discovery+ will have to distinct pricing tiers. The service’s ad-supported plan is currently priced at $4.99/month, while the premium, ad-free plan will cost subscribers $6.99/month.

WILL THERE BE A DISCOVERY PLUS APP?

Discovery has not yet announced on which devices the discovery+ app will be available, but it’s likely that the list will include the usual suspects (Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV, Chromecast, and Apple and Android mobile devices, among others). DOES DISCOVERY’S STREAMING SERVICE INCLUDE MAGNOLIA NETWORK WITH CHIP AND JOANNA GAINES?

You bet it will! In 2021, Fixer Upper stars Chip and Joanna Gaines will launch the Magnolia Network, a new channel that will take over for DIY Network. The Magnolia Network content will be featured prominently on discovery+, where fans will be able to stream reboot series Fixer Upper: Welcome Home, cooking show Magnolia Table with Joanna Gaines, interview series Road to Launch, and Chip-centric documentary Courage to Run.

Because Magnolia Network will not debut until later next year, discovery+ will host an exclusive preview of the network from January until launch day.

WHAT ABOUT THE 90 DAY FIANCE SPINOFFS COMING OUT?

Another key element of discovery+’s launch slate is 90 Day Journey, a new series that highlights the many iterations of the beloved 90 Day Fiancé franchise. 90 Day Journey will include four new shows — 90 Day Bares All, 90 Day Diaries, 90 Day Journey, The Other Way Strikes Back! — with additional titles to be announced in the months to come.
