‘Superstore’ Out of Business at NBC: Sitcom to End After Season 6

Superstore is shutting its doors for good after Season 6, Vulture reports. The NBC sitcom will end after its current season, the network confirmed today, bringing the show to a close after more than five years on air. Superstore Season 6, which premiered in October, is currently on hiatus and will end with 11 final episodes when it returns Thursday, Jan. 14.

The cancellation news comes after series star, director and producer America Ferrera left Superstore this season to explore other opportunities. The current season sees her character, Amy, leave for a corporate job in California while Jonah (Ben Feldman) stays behind at Cloud 9.

Superstore has always been a signature NBC series that has never failed to make us laugh while also thoughtfully examining important issues people care deeply about,” said Lisa Katz, President of Scripted Content at NBC, per Deadline. “This has been an amazing group of writers, producers, actors and crew to work with and we are incredibly grateful for all their contributions. This show will forever hold its place among the top workplace comedies for which we have a cherished history.”

Since it first premiered in 2015, Superstore, which follows the daily lives of a group of employees at a big box store in St. Louis, has grown to tackle topics most sitcoms won’t touch. Over the seasons, they’ve covered issues ranging from immigration to unionization and more recently, the coronavirus pandemic’s effect on essential workers, specifically retail employees. The series stars Mark McKinney as store manager Glenn, Lauren Ash as assistant manager Dina, and Colton Dunn, Nico Santos, Nichole Sakura and Kaliko Kauahi as store associates.

In a joint statement released today, executive producers Justin Spitzer, Gabe Miller and Jonathan Green thanked viewers and the network, while promising to give Superstore a fitting finale. “We’re grateful to Universal Television and NBC for letting us make 113 episodes of a show we’re so proud of, and for giving us the chance to work with such an incredibly talented group of actors, writers and crew,” they said. “We’re thankful most of all to the viewers who’ve stuck with us for the past six years (or discovered us somewhere along the way). We’ll do our best to go out strong and give you the satisfying ending you deserve.”
