7 Shows Like ‘Big Mouth’ to Watch If You’ve Already Finished Season 4

Every season is better than the last with Big Mouth, and Season 4 was no exception. This year, Nick (Nick Kroll) and Andrew (John Mulaney) went to camp, Jessi (Jessi Klein) moved to the city, and Jay (Jason Mantzoukas) and Lola (Kroll) struck up an unexpected romance. And of course, Missy (Jenny Slate and Ayo Edebiri) had a game-changing transformation and came into her own. The Netflix adult animated comedy also introduced a new adolescent pest this season — no, not Milk — welcoming Tito the Mosquito (Maria Bamford), the good friend to Depression Kitty (Jean Smart).

Big Mouth shines a spotlight on mental health this season, and it pays off. “As each character is pestered by Tito and to a lesser degree the Depression Kitty and the Shame Wizard, they handle their ribbing and self-doubt in drastically different ways,” Decider’s Kayla Cobb writes in her Big Mouth review. “It’s rare to see mental illness portrayed this way — as something that affects us all yet convinces us we’re alone. That’s what depression, anxiety, and shame do, they cruelly divide us. It’s miraculous that any show, let alone an animated one that once drowned Florida in a sinkhole, has managed to capture this duality.”

With such an excellent season, it’s easy to burn through all of the new Big Mouth episodes. And if you already did, don’t worry! We’ve rounded up a whole list of shows like Big Mouth to watch next.

'PEN15'

Pen15 is Big Mouth come to life. The live action comedy stars Maya Erskine and Anna Konkle as their middle school selves in the early 2000s, dealing with the everyday trauma of being an insecure tween girl. The comedians, both in their 30s, slump their shoulders and roll their eyes to embody the unique awkwardness of a 12-year-old, but every other actor around them in school is actually a kid, making the joke even better. And if you needed a nudge to turn to Pen15 next, Big Mouth already gave it to you — Maya and Anna make an animated cameo in the latest season as the Cafeteria Girls.

'Freaks and Geeks'

Cult favorite Freaks and Geeks makes for a great next binge after Big Mouth. For one, it’s only one season long so it’s easy to burn through, but fans still protest it’s gone far too soon. The Judd Apatow comedy follows Lindsay Weir (Linda Cardelini in full ‘90s grunge glory) and her brother, Sam (John Francis Daley), both high schoolers who don’t quite fit in. While Lindsay finds a new crowd with class-skipping, cigarette-smoking Daniel (James Franco) and Nick (Jason Segel), Sam is trying his best to find his place in school and just survive the next four years. Like Big Mouth, it’s both laugh-out-loud funny and unexpectedly touching.

'Sex Education

Sex Education lines right up with Big Mouth just from its name alone. The British comedy follows Otis (Asa Butterfield), a socially awkward high schooler with a sex therapist mom (Gillian Anderson). When his classmates learn about his unique advantage and expert knowledge on the subject, they all make him their go-to resource for sex advice. But there’s one problem — as helpful as he is, Otis has never actually had sex himself.

'Arrested Development'

Big Mouth has a good deal of cringe comedy (thanks, Coach Steve), but Arrested Development takes the cake when it comes to awkward jokes. The Mitchell Hurwitz comedy stars Jason Bateman as Michael Bluth, who is seemingly the only logical and level-headed member of his whacky family. When Michael’s father is taken away to jail, it’s up to him to run the family business — or try to, anyway. And his son, George Michael (Michael Cera) serves up plenty of that Big Mouth tween boy humor.

'Never Have I Ever'

Mindy Kaling’s series Never Have I Ever touches on similar themes to Big Mouth, but views the issues and complications of growing up through the perspective of Devi Vishwakumar (Maitreyi Ramakrishnan), a high school sophomore who is determined to shed her mistakes of freshman year and own tenth grade by losing her virginity and upping her social status. And while Big Mouth is inspired by Nick Kroll and Andrew Goldberg’s own lives, Never Have I Ever is partially based on Kaling’s experiences growing up outside of Boston.

British comedy The Inbetweeners gives you all of the raunchy Big Mouth humor you could possibly want or need. Friends Will (Simon Bird), Simon (Joe Thomas), Jay (James Buckley) and Neil (Blake Harrison) are figuring out life at Rudge Park Comprehensive school, where they try their best to get through their cringey adolescent years unscathed. While The Inbetweeners only aired for three seasons, it also inspired two movies, The Inbetweeners Movie and its sequel.

'Bojack Horseman'

While Big Mouth mostly stuck to raunchy jokes in its first few seasons, it dug deep in Season 4, exploring issues much more complex than it dared to before. Another Netflix adult animated series, Bojack Horseman, also conceals its dark and layered content under a cheery animated exterior. Will Arnett stars as Bojack, a washed up moviestar horse who drinks to cope with his emotions and self-loathing, but strikes up a comeback plan to get back in the movie biz and get his life together. Both sobering and silly, Bojack opened the gates for more honest, brave adult animation like Big Mouth
