‘Riverdale’ Season 5 Trailer: Time to Head Back to the Town With RIP

It’s been a long time since we last saw our best friends in the Town with Pep, but finally they’re back — with all the weirdness, murder, and sexy times that implies. That’s right, Riverdudes and Riverdames*: the Riverdale Season 5 trailer is finally here!

Riverdale, in case you’ve forgotten, ended its fourth season prematurely thanks to some sort of viral pandemic you may have heard about. Instead of the planned 22 episodes, The CW aired 19, ending with the Mädchen Amick directed “Killing Mr. Honey.” When we pick up in Season 5, Riverdale will begin with the already mostly-filmed “Chapter Seventy-Seven: Climax,” set at the Riverdale High Senior Prom. Written by Ace Hasan & Greg Murray, and directed by Pamela Romanowsky, the episode promises to have at least one break-up in between the tuxes, gowns and corsages.

After that, it’s on to finishing up the final two episodes of Season 4 with “Chapter Seventy-Eight: The Preppy Murders” and “Chapter Seventy-Nine: Graduation” before a seven year time jump finds the gang headed back to town with some seriously shaken up status quos.

But even with Betty Cooper (Lili Reinhart), Veronica Lodge (Camila Mendes), Jughead Jones (Cole Sprouse), Archie Andrews (KJ Apa) and all the rest embracing (or not, as the case may be) their new places in life, Riverdale is still gonna Riverdale. That means a new, overarching mystery, some new cast-members, including Erinn Westbrook’s Tabitha Tate, and of course a new Serpent Queen: Toni Topaz (Vanessa Morgan).

Season 5 will also see the return of Cheryl Blossom (Madelaine Petsch), Alice Smith (Amick), Reggie Mantle (Charles Melton), Kevin Keller (Casey Cott), who is now shacking up with new series regular Fangs Fogarty (Drew Ray Tanner), Hiram Lodge (Mark Consuelos), and even FP Jones (Skeet Ulrich) and Hermione Lodge (Marisol Nichols), both of whom agreed to return despite planned exits at the end of Season 4.

As for what brings the Riverdale teens back to town as adults? You’ll just have to watch the trailer above to look for clues. We’ll see you January 20 at 8/7c on The CW.

*Apologies about the Riverdudes and Riverdames thing, I’m just trying out some new material. Season 5, baby!
