Kevin Hart and Wesley Snipes Will Play Brothers in Netflix’s ‘True Story’

Netflix has tapped Kevin Hart and Wesley Snipes to star in True Story, a limited series from Narcos: Mexico executive producer Eric Newman. True Story marks the TV drama debut for Hart, who also serves as an executive producer on the eight-episode limited series.

True Story will see Hart play a fictionalized version of himself in the role of Kid, a famous comedian from Philadelphia who has an unfortunate encounter with his older brother, Carlton (Snipes). According to Netflix, the show’s official logline is as follows: “A tour stop in Kid’s hometown of Philadelphia becomes a matter of life and death for one of the world’s most famous comedians when the consequences of a lost evening with his wayward older brother threaten to destroy everything he’s built.”

The limited series was produced under Newman’s overall deal with Netflix, originally inked in late 2018. Newman, known for his work on Netflix’s Narcos franchise, will write and executive produce alongside Charles Murray (Luke CageSons of Anarchy), who serves as executive producer and showrunner. Hart’s studio, Hartbeat Productions, will also produce, with Mark Stein and Tiffany Brown overseeing for the company. Caroline Currier will oversee for Grand Electric.

True Story‘s eight episodes will be split among two directors. Stephen Williams (WatchmenLost) will direct the first four episodes, and Hanelle Culpepper (Star Trek PicardKung Fu Panda) will direct the final four.

“I’ve never been more excited about an acting project in my career,” said Hart in a statement. “I’ve always been a fan of Wesley Snipes and working with him is mind-blowing.  Having HartBeat Productions at the helm and working alongside Eric Newman as a partner and creative arm has been unreal, nobody is ready for what this show is going to be.”

“Kevin Hart’s career is one defined by courageous creative risks and Wesley Snipes is a legendary talent – together they are truly a dream team,” added Newman. “I am absolutely thrilled to be working with these two. As always, I am grateful to Netflix for their continued support, as well as to Charles Murray, Stephen Williams, and Hanelle Culpepper for their creative partnership.”
