‘Raya and the Last Dragon’ Coming to Theaters and Disney+ Premier Access in March

Disney announced today that the original animated film Raya and the Last Dragon will premiere both in theaters and on Disney+ this spring. While the film was originally slated to. only premiere in theaters, it’s now getting a split release on March 5, 2021. Like Mulan, Disney will release Raya and the Last Dragon with Premier Access, meaning the film will be available to watch to Disney+ subscribers with an additional fee. Although Disney didn’t disclose how much the Premier Access price would be, they previously charged customers $30 to see Mulan. 

Disney chairman of the Media and Entertainment Distribution Kareem Daniel shared the news during today’s Investor Day presentation. “In light of continued, covid-related challenges in the marketplace and our commitment to providing consumers greater choices than ever before, we are pleased to announce that we will release Walt Disney Animation Studios’ epic adventure story Raya and the Last Dragon through Disney+ Premier Access at the same time that we debut the film in theaters in March,” he said.

Raya and the Last Dragon follows a young warrior who is faced with the task of finding the last dragon in her home of Kumandra and saving the world. The official description reads, “Long ago, in the fantasy world of Kumandra, humans and dragons lived together in harmony. But when sinister monsters known as the Druun threatened the land, the dragons sacrificed themselves to save humanity. Now, 500 years later, those same monsters have returned and it’s up to a lone warrior, Raya, to track down the last dragon in order to finally stop the Druun for good. However, along her journey, she’ll learn that it’ll take more than dragon magic to save the world—it’s going to take trust as well.”

Kelly Marie Tran stars as Raya, with Awkwafina as Sisu, a water dragon. The film comes from directors Don Hall and Carlos López Estrada, and is produced by Osnat Shurer and Peter Del Vecho.
