HBO Max Will Finally Launch on Roku

At last, the news Roku customers have been waiting half a year for: HBO Max will be available to Roku users nearly seven months since it first launched earlier this year. Starting Thursday, Dec. 17, “Roku users will be able to download HBO Max from the Roku channel store and subscribe directly on their Roku device to access all of HBO Max,” the company announced in a press release today.

The HBO app on Roku will automatically update to the HBO Max app, allowing users who have already subscribed to HBO through Roku to access the streaming service by logging in with their existing HBO credentials.

“We believe that all entertainment will be streamed and we are thrilled to partner with HBO Max to bring their incredible library of iconic entertainment brands and blockbuster slate of direct to streaming theatrical releases to the Roku households with more than 100 million people that have made Roku the No. 1 TV streaming platform in America,” Scott Rosenberg, SVP of Roku’s Platform Business, said in a statement. “Reaching mutually beneficial agreements where Roku grows together with our partners is how we deliver an exceptional user experience at an incredible value for consumers and we are excited by the opportunity to deepen our longstanding relationship with the team at WarnerMedia.”

Tony Goncalves, Chief Revenue Officer, WarnerMedia, added, “HBO Max is an incredible product with an unparalleled content offering that puts the consumer at the center, and we’re thrilled that Roku users will be able to experience all the great stories HBO Max has to offer. We’re breaking new ground in the months ahead, and we can’t wait to work with our longtime partners at Roku to build on our past successes and bring HBO Max’s best-in-class quality entertainment to Roku’s large and highly engaged audience.”

The Roku news comes after months of negotiations between the two companies, with Roku looking to keep selling its customers HBO subscriptions using the Roku Channel Store, and WarnerMedia set on keeping HBO Max its own separate app, according to Variety. Just yesterday, HBO Max was made available on Xfinity X1 and Xfinity Flex, and was added to PlayStation 5. In November, Amazon launched the streaming service on its Fire TV and Fire Tablet.

Roku and WarnerMedia struck a deal just weeks before HBO Max’s highly anticipated release Wonder Woman: 1984 comes to the platform on Dec. 25 and premieres in theaters that same day. Other upcoming HBO Max releases that will soon be available to Roku users include Carrie Underwood’s Christmas special, new Euphoria episodes, and Meryl Streep’s Let Them Talk.
