‘His Dark Materials’ to Return for Third and Final Season

His Dark Materials is returning for one last season. HBO and BBC One announced today that the drama has been renewed for a third and final season, which will begin production in Cardiff, Wales, next year. Season 3, which will consist of eight episodes, will continue the story told in author Philip Pullman’s fantasy trilogy of the same name.

The renewal news comes just before His Dark Materials airs its Season 2 finale on Monday, Dec. 28 at 9/8c on HBO. The second season follows Lyra (Dafne Keen), who’s traveled to a mysterious deserted city while still reeling from the death of her best friend. Not long after she arrives, she meets Will (Amir Wilson) there, and the two strike up a friendship that only brings them closer when they realize their destinies are intertwined. While on a mission to reunite Will and his father, they’re challenged by constant conflict as a war breaks out around them. Back home, Lyra’s mother Mrs. Coulter (Ruth Wilson) is searching for answers to her daughter’s disappearance.

Along with Keen and Wilson, His Dark Materials also stars Ariyon Bakare, Andrew Scott, Will Keen, Ruta Gedmintas and Lin-Manuel Miranda, and new Season 2 cast members Terence Stamp, Jade Anouka and Simone Kirby.

“Bringing Philip Pullman’s epic, intricate and culturally resonant body of work to television has been a tremendous privilege,” Francesca Orsi, Executive Vice President, HBO Programming, said in a statement. “We thank our incredible partners at the BBC and the entire Bad Wolf team, led by the indefatigable Jane Tranter, for their exceptional work on the first two seasons. We look forward to completing the trilogy with this final chapter in Lyra’s journey.”

Executive Producer Jane Tranter added, “His Dark Materials has been a truly global TV experience and a personal career highlight. The creative team at Bad Wolf in Cardiff made the impossible possible and brought Philip Pullman’s worlds into vivid life.  To see that hard work and dedication applauded and embraced by fans around the world has made all the hard work worthwhile.

“None of this would have been possible without the wonderful commitment and conviction of the BBC and HBO,” she said. “I am excited, thrilled and honoured to be making the third part of Philip Pullman’s trilogy with their support and encouragement. Diolch.”
