After four parts and thirty-six episodes, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina is ending on Netflix. And just like fans of the show, the stars didn’t know the series was finished when they left the set back in February. Yet despite the abrupt — and surprising — cancellation of the Sabrina, during a recent press day held for the series that included Decider, the stars were mostly just thankful for the experience.

“You know what, it’s funny, because we didn’t know if it was ending or not,” Kiernan Shipka, who plays Sabrina Spellman on the series, said when asked if she snagged anything from set before wrapping the series. “I didn’t feel a lot of liberty to take a bunch of stuff. I didn’t know. Sabrina’s got so many cool things — she’s got little moose heads and tchotchkes all over her room. I could literally steal that entire room, but I didn’t. And I wish I did.”

Added Gavin Leatherwood, who plays Sabrina’s love interest Nick Scratch, “Um, I’m wearing the underwear that was put in my wardrobe. It is the most comfortable undies ever. And I’m not ashamed to say that they’re my favorite pair, just because of the show.”

In Part 4, Greendale is attacked by The Eldritch Terrors, the biggest threat Sabrina and her witchy friends have faced so far. Those pals include the aforementioned Leatherwood, as well as Jaz Sinclair as Roz — a teen who has the power of the Cunning, essentially a second sight — and Theo, played by Lachlan Watson. Sinclair, for her part, lamented the show’s cancellation, but thought the kids probably deserve a break after all those episodes fighting evil.

“I just think we did so much,” Sinclair said. “We’ve done so much, in so many different flavors. Every character has been up and down, and there’s moments where you kind of hate them — and then moments where they’re your favorite all of a sudden. I just think that we really, really, really soaked it up. Took advantage of it. Took risks, and did so much. While I would love to continue playing in this world just because it’s so fun, I definitely feel satisfied with where it’s wrapping up and how it’s wrapping up, and all of the juicy episodes that we’re giving.”

Watson, who had a laudably underplayed transition story back in Season 1, was mainly thankful for the opportunity to show their own story on screen. “For Theo, it was really cool that Theo’s arc kind of echoes a little bit of my early teenhood of figuring out who I was,” Watson said. “It was really cool to sort of dip back into that, and to be able to hold Theo’s hand and watch them also really come full circle into a fully-realized person. Find that happiness. Because I think everyone was a little worried that Theo’s life would just be really sad for a little while.”

Shipka agreed with Watson’s general assessment, noting that after playing Sabrina from age 18 to 20, the character becomes “a part of you and your life.”

“They become friends and confidants and vehicles through which you express your emotions,” Shipka continued. “To let go of that is hard, but it’s also beautiful.”

As for the actual ending of the series, despite the abrupt nature of the cancellation, the stars all agreed that Chilling Adventures of Sabrina is ending on a high note. Shipka called it a “yas queen yelling ending,” while Leatherwood noted that they approached the season as potentially being the end, in order to provide a “sense of closure.”

Still, with that question mark in the air, it wasn’t until this press day that the actors were actually able to say goodbye to the series with any certainty.

“As actors, we didn’t get a lot of closure until now,” said Sinclair. “Virtual closure.”

Leatherwood, too, felt this, but had a message directly for fans about the final episodes. “Do not be sad,” he said. “There are so many amazing moments that have come from this experience for all of us, and hopefully for everyone that has been watching.”

The final episodes of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina premiere on Netflix on December 31.
