What Does the Bee in ‘Bridgerton’ Mean? The Books’ Easter Egg Revealed

Nearly a week after its Christmas release, Bridgerton is the most popular TV series on Netflix. Whether you’ve finished the entire show or you’re still waiting for the Lady Whistledown reveal, it’s important to keep up with the Bridgertons and all of their family drama. Conceived from Julia Quinn’s romance novel series of the same name, the Bridgertons have loads of family history to catch up on, including their history with bees. Yup, the little black and yellow flying insect is super important to the Bridgerton crew.

The first season of the Shondaland series follows the unlikely romance between eldest daughter Daphne Bridgerton (Phoebe Dynevor) and Simon Basset (Regé-Jean Page), the Duke of Hastings. They stage a fake romance — any rom-com fan can guess what happens next. The last episode of the series is called “After the Rain,” and without giving anything away, what comes after the rain is a bee. As the camera follows each character in the final scene, it rolls over and zooms in on the insect on the windowsill. After the bee flies away, credits roll.

So, why was it so important for Bridgerton to end on that little bee? Why not that shocking Lady Whistledown reveal? Well, there’s much to learn about the Bridgertons, and the bee is one huge facet. Here’s everything you need to know about the bee in Bridgerton:

What does the bee mean in the Bridgerton finale?

Though the Bridgerton family is a packed household, you may notice one glaring absence: the Bridgerton patriarch. In the second Bridgerton novel, it’s revealed that Sir Edmund Bridgerton, the family’s father, was killed by a bee sting before the birth of Hyacinth. So, could that be the Bridgerton dad reincarnated, watching his family from another world? Perhaps.

Or, it could suggest more about the second season. One very important bee plays a huge part in Anthony’s (Jonathan Bailey) story, even forcing him into marriage. We’ll have to wait for Bridgerton Season 2 to find out if that’s the case.

What are some other Bridgerton Easter eggs?

All of the bees are the largest Easter egg — keep an eye out for other bee spottings throughout the series. There are other little details to look out for: for example, each family has their own color scheme in the show. Or, if you know who Lady Whistledown is, you’ll catch hints dropped around the series.

“I think fans of the book are going to see all the elements they love on screen too,” Bridgerton creator Chris Van Dusen commented on the show’s Easter eggs, “and that is elements like the bees, and that is the way that the siblings banter with each other and the love amongst the Bridgerton family.”

What will Bridgerton Season 2 be about?

Expect more bees from Season 2 of Bridgerton! That’s not all, though. If Bridgerton earns a second season — there’s a high probability it will — it should follow the second book in Julia Quinn’s novels. That means Anthony’s next up on the marriage market. The Viscount will finally get his much-deserved romance story in Season 2.
