Twitter Mourns ‘The Office’ Leaving Netflix: “Disrespectfully F*ck Netflix”

It’s the end of an era for Dunder Mifflin on Netflix. In just a few hours, beloved sitcom The Office will officially be leaving Netflix for Peacock’s greener pastures. Fans have known about The Office leaving Netflix for months (although it feels like years, at this point), but that hasn’t stopped Twitter users from mourning the loss of the series. As one particularly distraught fan put it, “I’m sick … disrespectfully fuck Netflix.” Harsh words!

As the streaming world has consolidated, companies like WarnerMedia, NBCUniversal, and ViacomCBS have laid claim to their titles in hopes of beefing up their own services’ libraries. Last year, Warner Bros.’ Friends left Netflix for new service HBO Max, and this year, The Office has fallen victim to that same trend. According to The Hollywood Reporter, NBCUniversal has paid roughly $500 million for exclusive streaming rights to all nine seasons of The Office, a figure that indicates the sitcom’s enduring popularity with viewers.

As a result of the mega-deal, The Office will be leaving Netflix at 11:59 p.m. ET on December 31, and fans are already counting down the minutes until it’s gone for good. “I’m really finna scroll thru Netflix and not have The Office as my default. Idk what to do with myself,” wrote one committed fan. “The Office being taken away from Netflix is a very serious offense towards my well being,” wrote another. “2021 is starting off with The Office leaving Netflix. The year is already cursed,” said another. Let’s hope they’re wrong…

Of course, The Office isn’t actually leaving streaming for good. Beginning tomorrow, January 1, all nine seasons of the sitcom will be streaming on Peacock, NBCUniversal’s new streaming service. Peacock will also house curated episode collections, behind-the-scenes footage, superfan extended cuts, and The Office Zen, a 24/7 channel of ambient Office-themed sights and sounds.

Plus, some of this content will even be free! Peacock currently offers a free, ad-supported tier that will house the first two seasons of The Office. In order to watch the rest of the show, plus the bonus content, fans will have to upgrade to Peacock Premium, which starts at $4.99/month or $49.99/year. Fans that can’t be bothered to watch commercials also have the option to upgrade again to Peacock Premium Plus, an ad-free plan priced at $9.99 a month or $99.99 a year.

Fare thee well, Dunder Mifflin Paper Company employees! You will be missed by Netflixers across the country.
