Netflix Increases Prices for Existing UK Subscribers Starting this Week

Netflix is officially hiking its prices across the pond. After raising subscription fees in the United States and Canada, the streaming giant is following suit in the UK, where existing customers will begin seeing price increases as early as this week. In a statement, Netflix justified the price increase by touting its plans to spend “over $1 billion in the UK on new, locally-made films, series and documentaries, helping to create thousands of jobs and showcasing British storytelling at its best.”

As with any price increase, the Netflix UK 2021 price hike has left subscribers with a slew of questions. How much is the Netflix price increase? What are the new Netflix UK prices for 2021? Consider this your official Netflix price increase UK 2021 guide.

NETFLIX PRICE INCREASE UK 2021: HOW MUCH DOES NETFLIX COST NOW?

Beginning this week, existing Netflix UK subscribers with Standard and Premium plans will see their bills increase. Netflix’s Standard tier will increase to £9.99/month from £8.99/month, while the Premium tier will now cost £13.99/month, an increase of £2.

Netflix’s Basic plan will remain the same price (£5.99/month), so those customers will not be affected by the UK price increase.

WHEN DOES THE NETFLIX PRICE INCREASE GO INTO EFFECT?

Technically, Netflix’s UK price hike has already gone into effect: according to Deadline, the increases were introduced to new customers on December 10. Existing customers have managed to get by for the past month without seeing an increase in subscription fees, but beginning this week, they will receive emails from Netflix and notifications in the app one month before the price hike is applied to their bill.

WHAT’S WITH THE NETFLIX PRICE INCREASE UK?

In a statement, a Netflix spokesperson said that the price hike will help to offset its recent $1 billion investment into British content such as The CrownSex Education, and Top Boy.

“Our price change reflects the significant investments we’ve made in new TV shows and films, as well as improvements to our product,” said the spokesperson. “Our basic membership will remain at the same price, ensuring as many people as possible can enjoy our content.”

NETFLIX PRICE INCREASE 2021: WILL NETFLIX RAISE PRICES AGAIN?

There’s no way to know for sure whether Netflix will raise prices again this year, but typically, the company does not increase subscription fees more than once a year. The last time Netflix raised UK prices was in May 2019, when the Standard plan increased from £7.99 to £8.99, and the Premium plan was bumped from £9.99 to £11.99.
