Well…that was quite a first week of 2021, wasn’t it? After the overwhelming chaos and upheaval these past few days have brought, we could all use a healthy dose of the emotional therapy we can always find in entertainment. As luck would have it, our favorite streaming platforms have stepped up to provide the respite we all so desperately need. And whether you’re sifting through options on Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime, or all of the above, starting with the freshest titles is always a strategic move. And if you want our two cents, here’s our recommendations on what to watch this weekend and where to stream it.

New Movies and Shows to Stream This Weekend: LupinHerself and Marvel Studios: Legends

This weekend, you’ll have quite a few new movies and shows to choose from when you sit down and try to decide what to watch. Over on Netflix you can embark on a fun adventure in another country (don’t tell me this author is the only one who considered buying one-way tickets to Prague this week) with the new original series, Lupin. And once you’ve had your polite fill of fantasy and revenge, hop on over to Disney+ where the superheroes we all wish existed in real life relive their biggest moments in Marvel Studios: Legends. If you’re looking for a nicely-packaged recap of everything that has happened in the MCU before the start of Phase Four, look no further. But if you are in the mood for an uplifting and inspiring drama about recovery and community, be sure to check out the new drama film Herself, which is new on Prime Video this weekend. This weekend’s streaming lineup is working hard to provide us the break we need. To get started, check out some highlights from the great movies and shows now streaming we’ve listed below:

New on Netflix January 8: Lupin

If you love a good foreign adventure show like Money Heist (a.k.a. La Casa de Papel) but are looking for a little more levity, you should definitely check out Lupin, the original series new on Netflix this weekend. This French fantasy/comedy follows the adventures of Assane Diop, a man who, inspired by the adventures of fictional gentleman thief Arsène Lupin, sets out to avenge his deceased father for an injustice inflicted by a wealthy family— an injustice that ultimately caused his death. Think ABC’s Revenge mixed with some sassy French adventure flair and you’ve got Lupin, one of the anticipated sleeper hits of this month.

New on Disney+ January 8: Marvel Studios: Legends

We all need some super-heroics in our lives after a week like this, and Disney+ is delivering with the release of their new series, Marvel Studios: Legends. New on Disney+ this weekend, this miniseries dives deep into the intricate web that is the Marvel Cinematic Universe up until this point in time, dissecting each major player, his/her big moments thus far and relationships to the other characters in anticipation for the launch of Phase Four. Every Marvel stan has watched all the bonus clips and featurettes either on YouTube or as a part of a movie’s expanded package, but now we can binge-watch it all — and perhaps learn even more, if possible — thanks to Marvel Studios: Legends.

New on Prime Video January 8: Herself

New on Amazon Prime Video this weekend is Herself, a touching drama about a young woman working to rebuild her life from the ground up (seems especially apt after this week, right?). Irish actress Clare Dunne stars as Sandra, a  young mother who, after breaking free from her abusive husband, finds herself struggling to get by with two young daughters and no help from the area’s broken housing system. She decides to build a new home of her own and even gains strength from the help of the community around her— that is, until her abusive ex-husband sues for the custody of her children. This touching drama will tug at your heartstrings in a refreshing way this weekend, we promise!
